    Unhappy XFX 6800 Ultra - b0rked

Looks like this XFX 6800 Ultra is gonna have to go back to Scan.

When it first arrived yesterday it worked but I did notice it doing strange pauses during 3dmark benching and playing FarCry. I put this down to legacy problems from having an ATI 9700 Pro installed for 2 years and not having reinstalled windows yet.

I left the machine backing up data over night, checked it this morning was still backing up. Computer was working fine coz I remember checking a few websites.

Came back from some food shopping at lunch and I turned the monitor on, I *think* it crashed as I turned the monitor on as I was backing data up via FTP (FTP server on my comp copying data over to my laptop via a wireless connection) at the time the laptop showed data being transferred. Turned the monitor on and the FTP connection timed out.

The computer was then flashing between the last screen of the desktop and a blank black screen, just on/off on/off. So I hit reset, comp came on but now I only get a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen, this is before the computers BIOS and indeed there are no BIOS beeps. The fan on the gfx card runs fine.

If I put the Radon 9700 Pro back in it works perfectly.

    What I have tried:

-A new PSU I had delivered but not installed (Antec TrueBlue 480w)
    -Both DVI ports
-One molex in either port as well as both (when only one in secondary port the card beeps).

I had only managed one successful 3dmark03 bench before going to bed without any pauses and it only gave about 11k (425 core and 1.2 mem).

Anyone with bright ideas (Rys?!?) please give em to me or I am gonna have to sort out sending it back to Scan on monday.

Thing is how long am I going to have to wait? Will XFX treat this as an urgent case and ship one specially to Scan? After almost two months of pre-order it would be the least XFX can do.

This has REALLY made me consider what card i want, theres a high failure rate with these cards. Yes, theres a lot of success stories, but i don't want to pay £400+ for a card that (ATM) seem to have a high failure rate.

iirc it was the leadtek non-ultra's that were the "bad uns".

Man that sucks! I wonder if its a fault with the PCB or Core? I wonder if it was nVidia rushing it out against ATi's X800 series?

Well I have just wrapped it up in a HUGE box and sent it to XFX, not sure I am greatly confident in the RMA support I am gonna get as its out sourced so the chances are they will get it, test it. Then wait around for a 6800 Ultra from XFX like everyone else (6 - 8 weeks no doubt).

That really doesnt help does it ?
Does the entire ATI crew have to try and turn every thread into a Nv vs ATI battle ?

Myth the 6800ultra is a fantatstic card. You should appreciate that both ati and nvidia have knocked out some really awesome next generation cards. I would have either tbh damn the expensive new hardware prices.

Hope you get a replacement soon dude.
