    GTX580 in SLI Question

I can access to two GTX580's and wanted to have a play with them in SLI. Would my PSU be OK to power these?

I have an OCZ Fatality 750watt Semi Modular GPU and would probably need some extension cables for the power to reach the second card.

    Re: GTX580 in SLI Question

I'm getting more and more confused by this, I've looked on power calculators that state between 700 and 1050 watts and I've spoken to technicians that are saying 1250 watts minimum.

If anyone can tell me the answer or point me in the right direction I'd be really grateful.

    Re: GTX580 in SLI Question

I run an SLi set up with 580GTX's & used a Corsair HX1000 PSU to run the 'whole' system.
I would go with a better supply if you want the system to run smoothly (580's are power hogs )

It's beginning to look that way! I can only use the cards for a few days, a week at most, so I'm not sure I want to buy a new PSU for such a short time. Which is a shame, if they GTX670's I would have had no issues with that.

So do you think it would be safe to run that config with a 750watt?

    Re: GTX580 in SLI Question

    A decent quality 750w? Definitely.

    I ran 2 x HD5870 + an 8800GTX for ~1 year on a 750w Seasonic. No problems at all....and that has significantly higher TDP than 2 x 580.

    Re: GTX580 in SLI Question

I would be concerned that it's an OCZ PSU.
If you look around the net, a lot of people have problems with these when they load them up.
If it was another brand (seasonic, corsair, enermax etc) I would say 'go for it'

Why do you say that? Is it because it is branded by OCZ?

You're not the first person to express concerns about the choice of PSU, but as yet I've not been told why it's not suitable, so I'm not trying to start an arguement, but if I do have a genuine reason to be weary of my PSU then now would be a good time to consider upgrading to a more reliable brand.

Were you aware that this particular PSU was made by Sirtec and won a Golden Award in this review at Hardware Secrets? As far as I know it was designed by PC Power & Cooling, who were bought by OCZ in 2007, all my research when I bought it pointed towards it being a good, reliable model, but if there's new information that warns against using this PSU then I would really like to know about it.

    Re: GTX580 in SLI Question

I was not aware that it was a Sirtec item but I have purchased PSU's that were 'branded' by other companies before & they ended up having a horrible & painful death.
As for being an expert on OCZ products, I just looked at the personal experience people had put in their reviews on newegg.

I've just had a look at Newegg and found

    52% gave it 5 eggs
    23% gave it 4 eggs
    10% gave it 3 eggs
    5% gave it 2 eggs
    10% gave it 1 egg

So 10% were neutral and 10% thought it was terrible while 5% thought it was bad the remainder were happy with it, which is 75% of the reviews. So while the 15% that gave it bad reviews are a bit on the high side an overall 4 out of 5 is still pretty decent and the first negative review I read was complaining about the red leds on the fan which was shown on the pictures on the site.

    Re: GTX580 in SLI Question

Obviously you know a lot more than me about running SLi systems & power supply's
(Only run 580GTX's for a year & now running 3x 680GTX's since launch day)
Please get the card & run them in SLi on your OCZ PSU. Everything will be great & you will have no problems. You only need 2x6 pin & 2x8pin extension cables
(obviously that is what you want to hear)
Good luck with your SLi build

No that's not what I want to hear. The question I need an answer for is will 750 watts be enough power?

And not is my PSU brand any good?

I have shown you the available information I had when I bought my PSU it was only a few months past it's launch in 2010 and at that time it wasn't getting a lot of reviews on Newegg but reviews on various sites were good.

Now two years on people that have run the PSU for some time are reporting the issues they are having or have had with these. I understand reviewers don't get to spend a full five years testing PSUs so they don't get to see how the performance degrades over time or what it is like long term. So my question now is what is it that you know of that I should be aware of?

I don't tend to replace PSUs as often as I do other components (that might be bad thing, I don't know) and when I bought the PSU I never imagined running anything more than a single mid range GPU but I thought it would be better to leave space and get an extra 150 watts just in case. As I've said above, there is now more information about the PSU than was available when I bought it so I do need to see it in terms of from the web site where you got your information so I can use it as something that I can look up and reference. I can't afford to change this PSU on a whim but I don't want to wait until it fails if it is as unreliable as previously suggested. So if you're saying that my PSU is not sound, I need to know why it's not sound? If from reading about this I can determine that we are talking about a serious and commonly occuring issue then I would put this higher up on my priority list, and I would do this before I start playing around with a friend's GPUs while he is away on his holidays, so when you say:

If you look around the net, a lot of people have problems with these when they load them up.
If it was another brand (seasonic, corsair, enermax etc) I would say 'go for it'
I want to see the exact same sites and information you had when you posted that so that I can look it through and make an informed decision. If I do find that I should be thinking about replacing this PSU then I'm really not looking forward to picking a new one, of all the components the I need to pick for a build it's selecting the PSU that gives me the most headaches. I read review after review, shortlist some and check with people on forums trying to get as much information as possible and even then I'm never 100% that I have the right one!

    Re: GTX580 in SLI Question

Unfortunately I am not an expert in PSU's & don't claim to be & I am not commenting on your PSU selection.
I can only express my own concerns about PSU's that are rebranded etc.
I have had personal experience with Antec 'not doing what it said on the tin' & my Corsair HX1000 was not happy running 580GTX's in SLi with the water cooled setup.
Now I will only run high quality PSU’s on my systems (I personally think I am pushing my luck with the Corsair AX1200 that I am running & I am looking @ the Enermax 1500 units)
The Corsair has also had ‘good reviews’ but they also suffer failures with high powered systems.
I can understand you don’t want any issues with your system & its commendable that you don’t want to damage your friends card.
As I previously said, I found the 580GTX's very good cards but did use a lot of power & put lots of strain on the PSU.
If it was my system (& this is my personal opinion) I would not run the cards on the OCZ PSU.

Ok, thanks. I can see where you are coming from now.

The thing to bear in mind with PSU manufacturers is that there are essentially three types of company out there:

    - OEM's are the Original Equipment Manufacturers which include companies such as Channel Well, Delta, Enermax and Sirtec.
    - Designers are companies that have their own design team and then they send their designs to OEMs to make to their specification, companies such as Antec, Be Quiet, Cooler Master, Corsair and OCZ (whose PSUs are designed by the PC Power and Cooling guys)
    - Then the Labels who have no control over the production or quality standards and these include companies such as Akasa, Hiper, Jeantech and NZXT, they just pick an OEM and get a PSU made that will ship with the Labels branding on it.

There are two really good sources of information on PSUs, the first is an article on Brands Vs. Manufacturers and the next is the RealHardTechX PSU Review Database.

But for some reason I can never find anything in a single resource that helps me find how much power I need when selecting a PSU or for occasionally messing around with swapping components in my rig.
