New SOURCE Engine Performance on ATI and Nvidia (HL2 uses it)

VR-ZONE has some benchies of the new SOURCE engine, and it looks as though it runs SWEET with 1600*1200 4xAA 8xAF on just about all cards except the regular 6800. ATI is slightly in the lead, but not as much as some of you expected or hoped. It is looking very nice, and the benchies also show it is pretty CPU limited at everything except top resolutions with AA/AF enabled.

    Check it out here... http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=1181&s=1

Some benchmarks are showing a big lead though:

Wow cheers mate I hadn't seen that one yet, ATI cards so seem to have a large advantage in that suite, very interesting. Well, I bought this 6800GT to tide me over till christmas/early 1st Quarter when R500 is out with PS3.0 suppost, im saving all my pennies for that. HL2 will scream on that i'm sure.

I doubt that sort of performance difference will stay, the architecture of the two cards is too similiar for this type of game, they should be pretty even. Only reason the Ultra is faster in Doom3 is because of the Z-Culling method and 32 Z-Ops per pass. HL2 is very much a traditional geometry, multitexturing engine with the odd vertex and pixel shader here and there.

The GamersDepot results have already been discredited (i.e. they don't line up with everyone elses...)

Add to the fact that this isn't the 'final' benchmark and both Nvidia and ATI are likely to release updated drivers when the game ships, then I'd take these 'results' with a large pinch of salt.

NVIDIA have not done their drivers yet - ATI are working really close with Valve - wait for the bigger picture
