Potential graphics problem
Hey all,
I`m having some problems when trying to play Witcher 2 on my rig(details on profile)
I have recently played through Skyrim with no issues but since trying witcher 2 the game freezes every couple of minutes for about 30 seconds. Flashes back to desktop then starts up again.
I have changed the settings to low in-game but the same thing happens.
I havent really tried any other games yet to see if there is an issue with the graphics card or if its game but I was wondering if anyone knows of any apps that I can check the graphics card to make sure its not to blame/is to blame?
If it is to blame and I need to upgrade what would people suggest? i`ve been a ATI user for most of the last 10 years but I have no problem moving.
I need a card that can play at 2560 x 1440
Cheers
Re: Potential graphics problem
I personally use OCCT for stress testing my GPU. Give that a shot. Are you using the latest drivers? It might be the game thats the problem, running the latest version/patch for it?
You'd need to tell us a what your budget would be for a new GFX card.
Re: Potential graphics problem
Driver issue maybe? I know W2 has an inherent stuttering problem but it shouldn't freeze and take you back to the desktop.
Re: Potential graphics problem
Drivers are up to date (12.10) And Game is on steam so as far as i`m aware should be up to date.
I`ll give occt a go later.
budget would be about 300-400 but less I can pay the better
Re: Potential graphics problem
Try removing 12.10 and going back to 12.8. My situation is almost certainly not the same as yours, but I'm not having a good time with 12.10 in several games while 12.8 seem solid.
Re: Potential graphics problem
Have you tried the 12.11 drivers??
Re: Potential graphics problem
Well for 300-400 you could get a lot
I haven't checked recently so correct me if im wrong;
Nvidia GTX670 £290 +/- (Really good card, I will be upgrading to this after xmas)
Nvidia GTX680 £360 +/- (The best Nvidia single GPU card they make, i think when it was benchmarked it was %10 better then 670 so for me not worth the extra premium)
ATI 7950 £230 +/- (Im not completely up to date with ATI but I think these cards are on par or close to the GTX670)
ATI 7970 £300 +/- (Again not completely sure but I think its on par or close to the GTX680 especially at 2,560x1,600)
Has this game always had this problem or is it sudden. Im not familiar with the game but was it made for Win7(assuming thats what you're running) if not have you tried XP compatibility mode?
Re: Potential graphics problem
I havent tried the 12.11 drivers yet.. Are they actually out officially or is it still beta?
I havent played the game before the weekend(steam sale impulse buy) Had some crashes with sky rim initially but that was fixed with patches and ran smoothly afterwards.
Re: Potential graphics problem
I've had this problem with both AMD (currently 7950 with 12.8, maybe once a month) and nVidia (8800GT, all drivers I used, all the time, real PITA). Windoze would report that the driver had stopped responding momentarily, but everything was cool because the problem had been reported. Of course the game had crashed in the mean time and usually left me with a corpse run to finish!
I'm waiting for the 12.12 to appear then will see if that helps the problem.
Re: Potential graphics problem
Hmmm just been running occt for a bit and it didnt cause any crashes and then tried furmark which again didnt cause any crashes.
Installed Heaven dx11 benchmark now so will try that.
Ive also downloaded the 12.11 drivers aso will see if that helps
Re: Potential graphics problem
Tried lowering Graphics resolution and the game worked for longer but then crashed out.
I installed GPU-z and the Core usage seems to be at 100% all the time the game is loaded dont know if this is normal though. I also noticed that vddc drops to 1.0 from 1.176 when the game freezes.
