    Linux GFX

I'm looking to build a Debain Linux rig (A p3 and some other stuff) and I was wondering what sort of GFX power I would need (hopefully I will be doing GIMP/downloading - surfing/web development on there) as I am not sure what Linux would really need.
I was looking at something in the way of a 5200, any ideas?
    Cheers

I've run Linux on some very old graphics cards, mainly Nvidia and Matrox stuff. For the basic stuff you want to do, the 5200 should be fine I would have thought. Might have to tweak around a bit with the monitor driver settings file during the X setup phase, but other just give it a try and see how you get on. Not sure if the Nvidia Linux drivers readme has anything in it; might be worth a look.

Cheers Nomadd, just found out the board the p3 has doesn't have AGP 8x
Looks like I'll be using an old Gf4 MX then, suppose they're not bad?

We've got some RedHat running around here on old (really old) Compaq kit. I think the specs. of these machines are Pentium 1's at about 60MHz, with onboard Intel VGA! Still, with plenty of RAM in them - well, for their day: 512MB - they run just fine. Remember, UNIX has been around more than 30 years, so any modern kit is easy-peasy for it; OK, X hasn't been around as long, but even so, it must be nearly 20 years old, so the same is true for any 'newish' graphics card. The kit you are looking at (p3/GfMX) will run great.

That shouldn't matter. As long as it can do AGP 4x you should be fine as most modern graphics cards support 4x/8x.

    http://www.giga-byte.com/VGA/Product...GV-N52128D.htm

Looking at getting that, only thing is under the specs it doesnt actually say it support AGP 8x/4x it only says 8x.

Do they just support it as like a compatability or do I have to find a diff. card?
