AMD 7970s, now I have to reinstall my X-Fi every restart to get sound working

    Hi,

Previously had a nVidia GPU, but have changed to 2x 7970s, but since I have had issues with my sound.

When I first installed the cards, the sound went. I had the 7970s listed as audio devices and my x-fi card.

I disabled the sound part of the 7970s, that did not do anything, so I uninstalled the X-Fi via device manager, then reinstalled and bingo my sound was back.

The problem is I am having to do this every time I boot my PC, just wondered if anyone with a similar setup had figured out the issue?

I have a Asus Rampage IV Extreme, the onboard sound is disabled in the Bios.

    Thanks,

    Ian.

I have the same problem with my PCI (not express) X-Fi sound card. Mine didnt happen because of the GFX card it just started doing it and now requires a reinstall pretty much everytime I turn the computer on. I always put it down to a defective card. I thought I was the only one.

Doesn't the Rampage IV have a really good built in sound card? You might be better just using that.

Sorry couldn't be much help, it might not be because of the GFX cards, I know mine isn't so just a little heads up.

Re: AMD 7970s, now I have to reinstall my X-Fi every restart to get sound working

    What I do:

    - never install sound drivers for my video card.

Generally this helps a lot for me (and I've never used the video card's sound anyway) so try uninstalling the devices and then set them as disabled too. I'm pretty sure having extra audio devices fecks things up for me - and of course every time you update your video card it shuffles your audio devices round again. For my nvidia drivers I always choose "custom" and only install the update tool, physx, and the driver - never the audi driver or the 3d vision crap.

Very occasionally the xfi disappears but a reboot fixes it. It's probably 1 in a 100 boots.

I also have the same issue with the X-Fi, only started since installing Windows 8 though.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try removing the GPU audio drviers completely. It only start since going to the 7970s, bit annoying though. The Rampage's audio is a 7.1 Realtek, it is good but the X-Fi just sounds better /

I thought X-FI had problems with some Intel chipsets? X-FI known for their compatibility issues that's why a lot of people stuck with the Audigy

My X-FI didn't play ball with my old nForce chipset

Re: AMD 7970s, now I have to reinstall my X-Fi every restart to get sound working

I have found a solution for the x-fis in windows 8.

I set everything how I like it (entertainment, 7.1 etc), then send your pc to sleep and then wake it up.

I have sound on every startup since with all settings how they should be.
