On the assumption that RL sorts itself out tomorrow and I am able to get a new gfx card for my shiny new G30 PC, what should I get ??
My old PC had a GT430. New PC is a GigaByte Z77 mobo, i5-3570k cpu, 16GB 1600MHz RAM and a 120GB SSD.
Mostly used for photo editing, HD video transcoding, music production, I know I don't need much as I'm not a game player, but it would be nice to have something future proof while I have the funds....
nVidia preferred (dont ask why, I just aint keen on AMD).
You need to mention budget first!
Don't believe old wives tails about AMD cards. Their drivers are fine and their hardware are fine. I have had both Nvidia and AMD cards for years now,and they are around the same in reliability,and I have owned around two dozen of them in the last decade.
The AMD GCN cards seem to have better OpenCL support performance ATM for the things you are looking at. Considering the MGE in Photoshop CS6 suite is using OpenCL and OpenGL and not CUDA ,GIMP is starting to use OpenCL too,DxO uses OpenCL and so is HandBrake in future builds,I would be considering maybe an HD7750. The GT640 GDDR3 is the Nvidia equivalent and appears to be not as quick in this regard.
Otherwise I would just stick with what you have. I suspect OpenCL should work on your current card as it is based on the Fermi architecture.

I should know later today if RL is going to completely restrict my buying, so fingers crossed on that. If RL works out OK then, as the GT430 is in my old PC I might just leave it there and get an upgrade for the new PC and for 80 odd quid the AMD seems to be a nice one. My not liking AMD is only based on the old drivers that didnt want to work in XP, so maybe I should just drop my prejudices :) I have CS6 Photoshop so hope to make the most of that.
