MSI GTX570 upgrade?

Hi,

So I just saw this deal on Scan:

Its on Today Only for £141 and I am sorely tempted. I am looking to upgrade from my current GTX460, I love that little card but its starting to feel its age. From what I've read, when overclocked the GTX570 should perform not far off the level of a 660ti in most games?

I game at 1080p and, as I do a lot of work with Adobe CS6 products, I need to stick with Nvidia. Also I've read the Fermi cards are better than Kepler for CUDA applications like this anyway thanks to higher memory bandwidth and such.

What do you guys think? Is it a worthwhile upgrade/ good value for money?

I have to say, I don't know how a 570 and a 460 stack up :P, so hopefully somebody else can help with that in particular... but I can say I own a comparable GTX570, and it's a great card. I bought it a while back and I'm still very much running all my current games (planetside 2, BF3...) at full graphics on 1080p no trouble in the slightest, if that helps at all...

Plus, I bought mine at £275, so that seems like a great price (granted, I think I bought it about two years ago, though, so maybe I'm out of touch :P).

I am really tempted now. Figure I can get maybe £70 for the 460 so its a £70 upgrade :)

EDIT: even the older 560Ti is more expensive than this when checking sites like overclockers. The more I look at it the more I think its a really good deal... maybe too good? Starting to think something must be up lol.

Terbinator, he said in the first post why he'd want to stick with nvidia :P... would the ATI cards have been as good for that kinda thing? (I've honestly no idea)

The 7870 performs only slightly faster than GTX570 and would cost £30-£40 more but the main reason was in my OP - I use the Adobe CS6 editing suite and it doesn't utilise AMD cards (on windows systems).

Scan just texted me so it should arrive Monday. For £140 it seems like a great deal, never owned any MSI kit so I just hope its decent :)

The Photoshop CS6 Mercury Graphics Engine does not use CUDA,it uses OpenCL and OpenGL:

OpenCL seems to be working fine.

Premiere Pro CS6 has OpenCL support meaning almost all the functions done with CUDA can be done with OpenCL now:

The AMD cards appear to have better OpenCL support ATM.

Yeah I've read that post before CAT but if you read the whole article it does say that it is only on OSX 10.7 and later and its only on a few of the AMD mobile chipsets.

For windows systems in order to use the MPE hardware acceleration in Premiere Pro you need a CUDA enabled card. Same thing to use the Ray Tracing 3D hardware acceleration in After Effects. The vast majority of my work is done in these two programmes.

In this post an Adobe staff member confirms that OpenCL will not be used on Windows systems, at least for the time being.

I did a lot of research into the cards I could use this year and I would consider AMD cards but they don't have the support on windows systems atm so they just are not an option until they are proven to work as well as Nvidia cards. Personally I hope that happens soon as it will give me more options :)

Toms Hardware seemed to have got their OpenCL accelerated filters running fine on an HD7970 under Windows. Good spot about the MGE though!!

Look for the "Technology Preview Premiere Pro with AMD" for the video,and that is the MGE working on a AMD GPU under Windows and that was two months ago.

The preview is actually running on a AMD A300,aka,the FirePro version of the AMD A10-5700 and using the IGP. So,I expect AMD GPUs and IGPs will be added to the list of officially supported cards and that link you mentioned was in April.

yeah i've read a few articles and posts saying people have got it working but until it is supported 'out of the box' it isn't really an option. To get the GTX460 working it just took a minor alteration to a text file but it wasn't on the officially supported list. I wanted an upgrade in this way just in case I ever have issues then Adobe can't say 'your card isn't supported'. Also the extra grunt in games is nice too :)
TBH a GTX570 is plenty powerful enough for the work I do (could perhaps do with more VRAM but 1.28GB is still fine).

Every other recent post I have read on the Adobe forums say CS6 MPE will still only recognise the NV cards on the official list but it does seem to be something that's in the pipeline. Like I say I can't wait till they get AMD cards supported properly for Windows as they look great in the benchmarks I've seen in OpenCL so they would be a great option given their efficiency and I've always had a soft spot for AMD/ATI.

I understand,if it only means a slight tinker to get your card running.

However,that A300 demo,was interesting as it using the IGP. The IGPs on the AMD and Intel CPUs next year should be stronger,so if you can OpenCL support on these,it means better entry level systems for Photoshop.
