    TFT help

Currently I have a 21" cornerstone p1500 CRT, I want to upgrade to a similar spec TFT.

    Most important:

No ghosing - I know response times dont mean that much.. so how does one chose?
Size - got to be atleast 17", pref 19".

I dont know enough about TFTs to think whats next important.

Id like native res of 1600*1200, or 1280*960, but no lower...
Edit: Why do they all have 1280*1024!!! thats not even a proper res!!!! !?

    Any suggestions?

Price range is upto £700 - what, its only money
But Id prefer not to spend more than £400, as most of that is suppost to be for learning to drive (and if I spend it, I will then need to find another job in 4 weeks, once this job ends )

As for response times, all you can do is read reviews and ask other people. The problem is that some people notice ghosting more than others. It's rather subjective; if you can get somewhere to have a look at the TFT before you order it, do so, although I know that's not often an option.

That said, if a reputable monitor company advertises a 16ms response time I think you can reasonably assume that there wont be any real ghosting.

If you want to spend all that money, you could go for one one of the 19" or 20" Viewsonics, they're supposed to be really good. Dell also do a 20" TFT with 1600 x 1200 and 16ms response for that sort of price range.

If you dont want to spend all that money, I'd suggest you're going to be looking at £450-£500 rather than a £400 max for a 19". I'd go with 19" as IMO it's worth the money and closer to the size of your current screen. You can easily get 19" TFTs for £400, but these tend to be the older models or the lower spec ones: they usually tend to have 25ms response times, or be missing DVI, etc. I'd say the really good 19" TFTs start at about £450+.

Sorry I dont know the model numbers of the monitors. But some sites with a good range are, obviously ebuyer, komplett, and www.digi-uk.com have quite a good range too.

As Hex said - Iiyama have an excellent rep, Sony, LG and Samsung all have some good models, and Viewsonics are supposedly ace.

Post a shortlist and we'll have a look

Btw....I hope you have a good graphics card, native res is a killer

my good gfx card died my 9700 capable of 500/330.... so no... not a good gfx card anymore, just a patheticlly slow 9500 non-softmodding pos that only does 340/280 - yes I am trying to play doom33, it is not fun

    - but I think it can handle any res a tft in my price range could throw at it...

The reson im choosing to buy a new tft is that if I continue to use vga I need new cables. Both of my cables are really old (15 years maybe) and I have tested the difference against a more recent cable. Also one misses pin9 (DDC) which limits it to 85 hz for some reson. The cable that has it can do 1280*960 at 100hz.
Also the crt is old and the tube is really at the end of its life....

Definatly want something with no ghosting and it has to have DVI, hopefully it will also include the DVI cable
Also what would be VERY nice is if it has dual input - I have two pc's and Ive been using my CRT as a video switch, as it has two inputs - I made up a K/B+M switch which I will still use.

Also what about dead pixels? :E I dont want ANY.

You'll be lucky to get the DVI cable included Most manufacturers dont include them, however I've noticed that some of the more recent models are now starting to include them. I bought mine for a fiver on ebay and it's absolutely fine

Most of the monitors you're looking at have dual inputs, usually one DVI and one VGA.

As for dead pixels.... Digiuk do a dead pixel test for a tenner, but it's the only place I know that does. It really is just something you're going to have to live with if you go TFT; a lot of monitors nowadays dont have any, but bar the dead pixel test, you cant guarantee it. I'm uber-fussy, but really, you cant notice the odd one on a large TFT. As it see it, there's no point spending a load of money and then winding yourself up over the fact that it's not perfect.

    LG defo does

The dead pixel test isnt that thorough tbh. One didn't show up on my brothers till about a week of constant use. I don't think they leave them on for a week to test do they? Also the pixel used to be black which wasn't so bad but has now turned to bright yellow. Great.

Don't forget that once you choose a TFT that resolution is going to havee to stick for most things as it will give the best image quality. Therefore if you geet a monitor with 1600x1200 res you had better have a damn good gfx card to pair it with ie x800 or 6800! Its all quite pricey really.

My 9700 was capable of 1600*1200 in everything in full quality, including far cry - though maybe not doom3
Res doesnt make that much difference to speed, turning down AF one, or something equally less important will often have more effect.

Im waiting for pci express, AMD to make up there minds on cpu sockets, and quite a few other things before I upgrade gfx again. First I want a 19" TFT - something to last.

Cant find any decent ones though... Im thinking just to get a 17" for now.. then later on I can add another 17", thats better than one 19"

They are great. Have had one for ~8 months and wouldn't go back to a CRT. No ghosting at all and nice crisp picture. Use the DVI if possible!
