    the main things to look at in a tft is the responce rate and the brightness/contrast ratio

    the cheaper end of the market will have say a 30ms (rise+fall) and 200:1 contrast when the better tfts have 16ms and 300 or 350:1

    if you are goin to be using the tft for word and web then the responce of 30 is fine but in fast games or watching a movie ghosting can appear, ghosting is when the old pixel carnt refresh fast enough before the new one needs to appear to update

    brand wise, stay towards the traditional monitor brands sony, LG etc etc

    oh and to dvi or not to dvi thats just another question.

    get back with what you are goin be using it for and ill pull up some models oh and the all improtant thing, how much cashola have you got?

    as far as im concerned the best 17" TFTs around at the moment are the LG Flatron and the Hitachi ones. both have 16ms response times, and both look good.

    20ms responce (although the "u" version is meant to have 16ms)
    450:1 contrast (my box says 500:1)
    dvi
    vga
    usb2 hub built in
    cables provided
    £330ish

    You might want to check out DigiUK, they are very good dealers in monitors, they have the samsung 171S on special offer atm, it's on the main page, £319, 25ms response rate (IMO 25ms is fine for games, i am running a 19" Samsung TFT with a 25ms respsonse rate and it's fine for games) and a 350:1 contrast ratio

    full specs:

    Viewable Area = 17"
    Type = TFT LCD
    Maximum Resolution = 1280 x 1024
    Response Time = 25 ms
    Horizontal Frequency = 30 - 81kHz
    Vertical Frequency = 56 - 85Hz
    Dimensions (Width : Height : Depth) = 444 x 457 x 208.4mm (with stand)
    Weight = 5.4 Kg (Net)
    Contrast Ratio = 350:1
    Viewing Angle(Horizontal : Vertical) = 160°/120°
    Power Consumption Operational = 40 Watts (max)
    3 year onsite warranty including backlight

    They have some very nice monitors over there, pay attention to the Samsungs and the Iiyamas which are also very good monitors oh and if you buy from there, it's worth the extra £10 for a dead pixel check (if it has dead pixels before they send it they will replace it with a new one until they find one with no dead pixels)

    If you can find them, Eizo makes excellent LCDs.

    I got a LG Flatron L1710B - its been a great buy and no regrets. Would recommend it highly.

    The only bit I dont like is that it could have done with some kind of system where the wires could be "channelled" and hidden - right now they are visible. But then I dont know of any TFT that actually offers something like this. Ho hummm
