    100-170 Quid - any suggestions ?

    Hi there good people!

I am starting a new build gaming PC - This post is 2 sections.

    What I have and want:

Want to overclock when I get it (should be fun, good luck I know), and SLI eventually.

Want to run medium end games on full graphics with over 60FPS or higher - the games I will be playing are:
League of Legends, Company of Heroes 3 (when it comes out), War Z, Sniper elite 2.

(Basically any first person shooter that isn't mega demanding to run on high graphics without having FPS problems like I do on my laptop)

Have 900 quid to spend overall (full cabinet + screen + cheap keyboard). - looking at maximum 160 quid for graphics card I think?

    Will have i5 2500k.

    Will have 8GB RAM.

    22 inch monitor on 1920*1080

    What I found:

    HD 7850 @ 120 quid
GTX650 Ti @ 93 quid -- (which is apparently just as fast as an overclocked HD 7770, but cheaper?)
    HD 7770 @ 100 quid

I'm at a bit of a loss so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

The 7850 is faster than the 650ti. the 7850 can be overclocked well too.

I would go for that as a first choice. I have a Asus 7850 direct CU2 and its a good card.

Fantastic card, under £160 and works well under SLI.

The Asus DC2 is a good card, but it isn't as fast as a 660 and they just aren't cheap, I can't find one for less than £160.

I think the AMD equivalent of a 660 is a 7870 which is well more expensive.

LoL will run fine at 1920X1080 on an HD5850 1GB or HD6870 1GB.War Z is based on the same engine as DA:O,which means even a card like an HD5850 would be fine. Sniper Elite 2 tends to run better on AMD hardware. CoH2 has not come out yet,so it is hard to say which would be better.

my GTX460 is running 1080p just fine so i imagine most cards say 560 or 560ti or the AMD equivalents (6850?) would do just fine and they're probably dropped in price enough to hit your price range (hopefully - not actually checked)

    Re: 100-170 Quid - any suggestions ?

    Ok so looking at http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts...d%5B5454%5D=on
    ...it seems the GTX 660 > 7850 , however 20 quid more.

If I have the money I will go for the GTX660 - if not I will go for the 7850 (and choose mobo accordingly).

CAT THE FIFTH, your knowledge really knows no bounds does it X_X where do you learn this Though it may seem overkill for the current games there are 2 reasons why I am choosing a higher end graphics card:
    1) I might be tempted to get more demanding games when I realise my computer doesn't suck (damn laptop)
    2) This is going to be my new hobby and motivation behind my job - something I can work at, see results, learn about, have fun and be proud of. God know I need the motivation at the moment aha (unfortunately no, not religious)

Thanks for the input people! Got some number crunching to do and research on mobo's n total prices -.O!

I was only giving you a rough indication of what the games are like,as the options you gave in the OP were hovering about the £100 to £120 mark. However, you know the relative positions of your options though,so choose the best you can afford.

Yes, I probably should have updated the timescale. The figure was based on what I can afford right now - but hey - I can wait a month, I've realised there's no need to rush things, especially when there's such a large amount to consider.

    Re: 100-170 Quid - any suggestions ?

Now,you have a rough idea of what to look for,and if you have a bigger budget in a month,I would come back then to re-check what needs to be bought. You might even find some better deals.

You said you could spend upto £1100. For around £280 to £300 you could get a GTX670 or and HD7970. Core i5 and a HD7970 or GTX670 would probably be able to run most games at very good settings at 1920X1080 for a while(hopefully).

    Re: 100-170 Quid - any suggestions ?

PiMan your link is looking at the 660 Ti which is a different more expensive card, take a look at this article:
    http://www.techspot.com/review/603-best-graphics-cards/

There are 2 versions of the 7850, one with 1GB memory the other with 2GB, they both have the same power, but it might be in some instances that 1GB is not enough although that is very rare at the current moment in time. The 1GB is a fantastic budget card, although I wouldn't really classify your overall budget of £900 as a low budget. The 2GB card isn't really a whole lot cheaper than the faster 660.

I'd seriously consider upping your budget for the graphics card and perhaps saving some money on the CPU side of things.

    Re: 100-170 Quid - any suggestions ?

Ah phooey, and I was trying to be so precise with which name I was putting in >.<

Yeah, focussing on the graphics card is something I'd like to do but I'm not sure about CPU's. I'll have a look at what's available.

If you've got any idea on any particular CPU would be suitable then I'd be over the moon!

    ----

Once I've had a look at the price of the rig with a lower end CPU + GTX 660 - I'll consider the more expensive option you suggested CAT THE FIFTH and have a look at what I can do budget-wise.

He said he could spend upto another £200 next month. So TBH,he could fit in a HD7870LE/GTX660TI/HD7950/GTX670/HD7970 into the build and probably still not use all of his expanded budget.

    Re: 100-170 Quid - any suggestions ?

The 660 SLI option isn't a bad one either, it's barely any more expensive than a 670/7970 and will be faster @ 1080p, although the 192bit bus would struggle if you ever wanted to go multiple monitors.

But if you do want to SLI it's worth doing it sooner rather than later. If you plan to SLI in 2 years you will probably find that it's better just to upgrade to another single card and that spending extra money on an SLI capable PSU and MB was wasted.

    Re: 100-170 Quid - any suggestions ?

It's likely I'll be undertaking an SLI in a year. Would also like to have the possibility of 2 monitors open - this is appealing to me for multitasking, recording and uni 3d design programs.

So in any case, with the i5 3750 - it would be better to start out now with a "HD7870LE/GTX660TI/HD7950/GTX670/HD7970"? -If the machine is good enough I very well may just upgrade the card in a few years, but would the i5 3750 handle an SLI assuming I used on of the cards just mentioned?
