    GPU Overclock

Hey everyone, so recently I have had a go at overclocking my GPU, Its a GTX 470 and I was wondering how my overclock stacks up, I used MSI's Afterburner software, and a combination of 3DMark11, Heaven and Furmark to ensure stability and I have managed to get 749Mhz on the core and 1841Mhz on the memory with stock voltage, a 15min run through Furmark with my Fans at 100% brought the GPU temp up to a max of 95C. So is my Overclock good or bad?

What where the default speed before you OCEd.?

If I had my card running at 95deg with the fans on 100, I would turn them down a little. You will loose some speed but protect your card.

I would find out the Max temp for the card as well.

Aslo, can your PSU handle that load for a prelonged time. As the card goes faster, so does the power requirements.

    Re: GPU Overclock

Bad, oh so bad; I would not use it long term and have you given it a voltage bump? You can take the side off your case to lower temps maybe.

How noisy are the fans at 100%! 608 is default speed?

    Re: GPU Overclock

Yeah, 95 is a bit high for regular usage (although it's not much hotter than the GTX480 ran in stock configuration), although the card should be "safe" up to about 100°C - however that's a bit high for long-term usage. Ideally you don't want to be going over 90°C

OTOH, that sounds like reasonable clocks for a 470 to me, and if you don't mind running your card a bit hot and noisy you could probably stick with it, although (as others have said) dropping back near 700 would be a safer option long-term...

    Re: GPU Overclock

As has already been said, the temperature does seem higher than I would personally recommend keeping it. Play around a bit and see what kind of temperatures it reaches with each adjustment.

    Re: GPU Overclock

    Hi guys

deejayburnout the default speed for the card was 607MHz on the core and 1674MHz on the memory, as for the max temp for the card Nvidia's website say's it will go all the way up to 105c. My PSU is a corsair 850 Modular, its good for 2 680's in SLI or suppose to be.

Domestic_Ginger No I haven't given it a voltage bump at all its still on stock voltage which is 975mV, as for the noise of 100% fans they are loud but not that loud, I can't hear them when I have my headphones on and stock speed is 607MHz.

scaryjim I see so in your opinion the 749core and 1841mem speeds are reasonable for my card just a big question mark over how hot it gets?.

3DWizard ok I'll see what I can get.

Well iv just done another run in furmark at 749/1841 and it only reached 89C this time :S I'll try another run in a moment at stock speeds and let you guys know what temps im reaching and also let you know what temps im reaching in heavan and 3DMark11

    Re: GPU Overclock

well Iv just finished doing all the benchmarks at both stock and OC'ed settings, what I did was 15min of benchmarking each time with a 15min break in between each test to let the GPU return to idle temps which is 34C at 30% Fan. These are the results I got below

    OC'ed Speed 749/1841
    Stock Speed 607/1674

    Furmark
    OC'ed 89C 100% Fan
    Stock 80C 80% Fan

    Heavan
    OC'ed 70C 71% Fan
    Stock 67C 66% Fan

    3DMark11
    OC'ed 73C 77% Fan
    Stock 69C 70% Fan

    Are those Temps looking better?

    Re: GPU Overclock

Yeah, they look pretty reasonable to me. My reference GTX8800 used to run up to 84°C at stock in Furmark, so 89°C on a heavily OCed 470 is pretty good - which model have you got?

As you can see from your results, Furmark is designed to work a graphics card much harder than a normal load will, so it always gives a worst-case result for temperature and fan noise. The Heaven and 3DM11 results look good for a Fermi-based card.

    Re: GPU Overclock

Scaryjim That's good to know, I feel better now about my temps, was kinda panicking a bit but yea my cards is the Palit dual fan GTX 470.

Yeah I have heard furmark runs your card ridiculously hard so I was just using that for checking what the temps are like would be and also checking for errors or crash's, I was using both Heavan and 3DMark11 to look for artifacts, mind since posting those speeds I did notice some artifacts in Dirt 2 last night so I have backed off the OC just a tad, im now on 747/1827

Do you have good airflow in your case? What case is it, and what fans?

    Re: GPU Overclock

Oswald Id like to think I'v got good airflow in my case, I have a Antec 902 case (pre USB 3.0) all the cables are routed correctly so their is no obstructions, in total their is 4 fans, 2x 120mm fans at the front blowing into the case, a 120mm exhausting at the back and a 200mm exhausting on top of the case, I also have one of these inside the case too ( http://www.scan.co.uk/products/therm...66-amd-am2-am3 ) Id like to put more fans in the case but in all honesty I don't know wear I could put them.
