    New GPU Problem

    Hi all,
Just upgraded from an 8800gt to a 2gb 7850 Radeon HD.

I have an Asus IP35 Pro with a Core 2 Quad Q8200 running at 2.73 Ghz.

4gb ram, windows 7 64 bit home premium.

The PSU is a modular Corsair 620w.

System WAS solid as a rock.

Since putting the new GPU in, I played Dead Island a couple of times, and it would just die. The screen would go blank, saying "switching to HDMI Power saving mode" or some such (Which is what it says when I power down), but nothing I could do would make the screen come back on.

The fans are all working. Catalyst showed a GPU temp of only about 58 - 60 degrees, so fairly confident it's not an over heat. I had to force a power down and, not happy about this bit, had to reinstall Windows, etc. MOBO 2 character display says FF (Functioning Fine), so all OK there.

Was prepared to write it off to an instability in Dead Island, as I note that it's had issues, but it's just happened on Crysis Warhead as well.

I'm wondering if my PSU is up to the task. I have 1 HDD, 2 SDDs, 1 DVD drive, 1 bluray drive, normal case fans and the GPU running off the power.

Should this be causing me problems? Do I need a more powerful PSU? Any ideas?

    Re: New GPU Problem

620W is way more than you should need for either card. You could happily run 2x 7850s on that wattage.
The rest of your components won't take much power either.

    Re: New GPU Problem

Are you running your monitor through the HDMI connector? Try using one of the DVI ports instead, it could be a dodgy display port.

    Re: New GPU Problem

I mean it might still be the PSU, but not because it isn't up to it, it might just be faulty.

You sure the power connector to the video card is secure?

    Re: New GPU Problem

Hi Barker, I am using the HDMI, yes. I've got two monitors, the secondary is using the DVI. I hasten to add that the second monitor was disabled during the game with windows+p (not just turned off).
Just waggled the Power Connector to the card. It's stable.
you have given me pause for thought, though: the HDMI connector is quite "fat" with a large plastic case just next to the connector head, making it difficult to slot into the gap at the back of the PC> It's not the secureist fit ever.

    Re: New GPU Problem

Might be worth running just one monitor via DVI and see if it does it still, then the same with HDMI.

    Re: New GPU Problem

    Could be metal touching?
Also, I know this sounds odd but try inserting the card different, such as clipping the front in first then back and visa versa.

Reason why is my old card required more force on the back half of the plates than the front.

May be the PSU not giving a stable current, could even be the PCI-E power cable being faulty, you could try the supplied molex to PCI-E.

Try running at lower hertz, make sure both monitor and display adapter run at same hertz, worth a try. Maybe.

    Re: New GPU Problem

25 minutes of Far Cry 3 without incident... temp didn't go above 50. That can't be bad.

    Metal touching might be right.

Bed now. Will try Crysis again tomorrow night.

    THanks all.

    Re: New GPU Problem

OK, in the name of research, I've selflessly had a good long play on Crysis Warhead, Arkham Asylum (Man I hate GFWL) and UT3. It seems to be working OK now. I did, however, take some clippers to the back of my case to give my fat HDMI plug some extra space to properly slot in.

1 odd, but cool effect I've noticed: Arkham Asylum is th eonly game I have that automatically shuts down or blacks out my secondary monitor.. That's pretty cool.

    lol. More first world problems.

I actually keep testing mine until I've played a game to 100% completion, just to be certain. Sleeping Dogs is 40 hours + and I still have some events and jobs to complete in order to make sure my rig is suitably stable!

Cool, glad you got it sorted. Have fun testing some more, just in case.
