    GTX660. Thoughts appreciated

    Good morning all,

I've just had confirmation from the very helpful Amanda at Scan (having been helped to this point by the equally helpful Mick) that my Gigabtye 7850 was defective, and has been successfully RMAd.

So I'm on the lookout for a replacement for my 8800GT.

    PSU is 620w Corsair Modular.
    Mobo is Abit IP35 Pro
    CPU Q8200
    Sound: X-fi X-treme music

I was thinking of getting one of these:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-m...0-dport-dl-dvi

when it comes back in stock, or

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-g...1098mhz-cores-

It's the absolute limit of my budget, and a bit more than the 7850, but looks good to me. I want to stick with Nvidia. I have two monitors, and would like to run both through DVI (on the 7850 I had one on HDMI and one on DVI. Call it illogical if you want, but I'd like to get them both on DVI).

    1. for my budget, is 660 probably about the range to look at?
    2. Anyone got any other helpful thoughts?

I've been planning a "dream basket" of mobo, CPU and memory upgrades as well, but I think that's a long time in the future, and has only illustrated to me how out of touch I currently am

If £160 is the limit of your budget, then maybe so, although if you wanted to stretch to a 7870, you could probably buy this and sell the Far Cry 3 voucher to offset the extra.

I've just bought a Gigabyte GTX 660 OC, and quite happy with it so far. Very quiet and running at 1100(boost)/6100.

If you don't mind going back to the AMD architecture, you coluld try this:

    http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...roductId=53474

Although it's called a 7870, it's based on the more advanced 79xx architecture, and performs somewhere between a 7870 and 7950. Probably the best 'bang per buck' in your budget area I think.

Believe the 7870 to be slightly faster than the 660 depending on game. Scan have had the dual fan MSI 7870 "Dark Knight" on today only for ~£172 often but it is currently out of stock so would have to wait for stock and for it to come up on today only. Plus it only has one DVI.

If you can purchase from Dabs they have the Gigabyte 660 in stock with Assassin's Creed 3 for £168. Seems a good deal.

The ones from Scan also have AC3 bundled.

It's a pity the Twin Frozr card has gone up £20, that was a total bargain at the old price.
Interestingly adding £20 to the price counts as a "SALE" in Scan's eyes.

I got the zotac 660 and so far am more than happy with it. Enjoying Physx in Arkham City.

Having some shadow issues in Portal 2 (not HL2, though, oddly) with soft shadow edges (when you're in the lab with teh kids experiments, and look at the blackboard, the light cast by the... thing/ robot... that's helping you makes serrated, moving shadows. That's the most noticeable.

Also, grass shadows on Far Cry 3 are a bit flickery, which didn't happen with the 7850 in the new minutes I could get it to work each time. Other than that, though... it's great.
