    What's your graphics card history?

I understand that different age groups will have their own and many of the younger forum member may not even heard of the older cards, but it will be interesting to see if there is a pattern to which gen cards were skipped or have been popular.

My list - starting from around 10 years ago:

ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128Mb (Sapphire)
Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT 256Mb (EVGA)
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512Bb (EVGA)
    ATI Radeon 5850 1024Mb (Sapphire)
Nvidia GeForce 470 GTX 1280Mb (Gigabyte)

Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970 is next on my list, will be buying in the next week or so.

Re: What's your graphics card history?

I've had other lesser cards in and around, but the ones I purposely bought as a decent card were...

    1998 - 3DFX Voodoo Banshee 8MB
    2002 - Geforce 4 ti4200 32MB
    2004 - ATI 9800 Pro 256MB
    2012 - ATI Radeon 7750 1GB

I've been through the HD4200 and HD6530D, and bought discrete HD3470. For a hardware enthusiast, it's amazing how little hardware I actually buy...

Re: What's your graphics card history?

I remember my first card was a Matrox PowerVR, but that was quickly binned for a voodoo2.
    In the last few yeasr
    Nvidia 6600GT
Nvidia 8800 GTX (Dead on arrival)
    ATI 4850

Currently reviewing my options since the 8*** range seems to be on hold for most of this year. Can't decide between a 7850/70 or 7950. All depends on cash and what I need to do on the house this year!

Its three new IGPs,when I add the GeForce 9300 mGPU!! However,I ditched the HD5670 and don't use the HD2000. With the smaller performance jumps at under £150 these last few generations, the graphics card space is getting less and less interesting. I suspect to get a doubling of performance over my HD5850 1GB I would need to spend over £150 now!!

I actually seemed to have acquired more CPUs than discrete cards in the last few years, for some reason!!

But TBH,I am interested in photography and cameras too but most of my equipment is pretty old. As with all these hobbies, budget is the problem!!

One of the reasons why I will be upgrading. It's been around 2.5 years since I got the GTX 470, and paying £300 for around double FPS I will get with 7970 is worth it in my opinion. Especially since I recently upgraded to a 120Hz monitor.

If you take away what I can sell GTX 470 for and the games that come bundled with new ATI cards, it's an even better deal.

Re: What's your graphics card history?

My list consists of (and I think its in order)
    Geforce 2 MX 400
    Geforce 4 MX 440SE
    Geforce 4 MX 440 AGP 8X
    Geforce 4 Ti4200 8X
    Geforce 4 Ti4800
    Geforce FX 5200
    Geforce FX 5500
Geforce FX 5700 Ultra (Got it for half price thanks to PC World and a price mix up)
    Geforce 6600Ulta
    Geforce 7800GT
    Geforce 7900GS in sli
Geforce 8800GTX (Didnt need to use the radiators to keep my house warm with this card)
Geforce GTX560Ti (Waited YEARS for the Ti brand to come back)

I am still using my 560 until it dies then I probably get the 660ti/670 or maybe an ATi 7950 with the game deal they currently have.

No im not a Nvidia fanboy. Ive never had any problems with Nvidia so haven't had a reason to change.

I go back to EGA. I don't know how all you guys remember all the cards.

Geforce 4 Ti4200 was a legendary card and the one I remember the best.

I was thinking the exact same thing! I seem to recall getting a 3Dfx when they first came out, but after that it's been too many years to recall accurately. I did have a Ti4200 too now you mention it

    Last few years has been:

    ATI X1900 XT
    AMD 5770
    nVidia 560Ti
    nVidia GTX 670

Re: What's your graphics card history?

    ATI All-in-wonder Rage II+ 4MB PCI

Hercules Kyro II (Hercules) - Probably on of the most sexy cards I ever had with a TITAN VGA Cooper cooler

nVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4200 (ASUS) - Short lived, sold it soon (less that 6 months)

nVidia MSI 5950 (MSI) - Definitely the most sexy of all cards I ever had with super effective cooling even under OC

nVidia Geforce 6600 (some green PCB, Leadtek or such) - Was from a refurbished batch, was considered dirt cheap back then (got 2x cards for the price of less that one), got it as a pair for SLI in a ASUS A8N-SLI
