High performance, zero-power when unused (HD4000)

I'd like to buy a decent PCI-Express 3.0 graphics card for playing BF3, but I'm looking for one that actively shuts itself down (and relies on my Core i7 HD4000 on-chip graphics) when not in use. The stats I saw 6 months ago imply that the big cards (Nvidia GeForce 6XX) still consume 30-40W even when they're not actively pushing polys. Is a proper 0-to-3W-when-not-in-use card available? Any advice appreciated.

Which stats were they? Idle power draw of the whole system should be around 30-40W, not just the graphics card.

AMD cards have a zero power draw mode, but only when the display is asleep (or it's a spare card in CF).

Would Lucid Virtu be useful here?

In the mode where you go through the integrated chip, possibly, but I thought that was an inferior way of doing it in terms of the performance hit?

If its still buggy, then it is probably better to put up with the slightly higher power consumption!!

Re: High performance, zero-power when unused (HD4000)

Actually this is on my wishlist: use onboard when most of the time and have the graphic card powered off using ZeroCore. Problem is it's still a work in progress. AFAIK for now it only works when a card is the non primary in crossfire and not when paired with onboard. Not with Intel's onboard nor with AMD's own. Maybe with GCN2.

BTW: 28nm cards use a fair bit less than 40W when idle. Under 10W is fairly common now:

The reason I'd like this is to have the fan turned off - and the CPU and PSU fan off too would be nice too. But while semi-passive PSUs are available and good a CPU heatsink are almost silent, graphic cards are noisy
