6 pin in an 8 pin? will the gpu work?

Okay, I have bought a 7950 sapphire vapor X gpu, Before I purchased it I read/ looked at the images on tech power up and saw it had 1 8 pin and 1 6 pin for the power. (its due to arrive soon) However, when checking out reviews via youtube and sapphire's website, it seems that they now have 2 8 pin power connectors . My Psu only has 1 8 pin and 1 6 pin. So can I get away with a 6 pin in the second power connector? i.e do all the power wires join together at the gpu? or do each wire power different parts of the gpu? I don't want to buy a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter and I don't want to use the 8 pin to molex that comes with it. I don't wish to buy a new psu as mine works fine, also there doesn't seem to be many psu's which offer 2 8 pins unless I pay big bucks or high wattage.

I expect the connectors are indeed all wired together at the gpu. However, if the extra pins are to supply power for overclocking headroom you might be OK (as long as you don't overclock). If it actually needs it...

You know how much your 7950 is supposed to draw? That is quite a supply it has there, 2x150W from 8 pin connectors + 75W from the motherboard = 375W, my entire system could run on that CPU and all

This is the PCI-E Connector on my GPU. I don't need the additional pins but as you can see, the cables come from the existing 6 pin connector rather than additional cables down the sleeve. I wouldnt leave the pins empty i dont think, but an adapter would probably be fine, but what PSU do you have, just so we can be sure?

Re: 6 pin in an 8 pin? will the gpu work?

Thanks for your replies, My PSU is an OCZ 600w modxtream. The 7950 has just arrived, and although it states 1 8 and 1 6 pin required on the box, upon opening it, I see it does have 2 8 pin connections, and the thing is huge compared to my 7850. I think to be safe I will run to maplins and get some heat-shrink and convert my 6 pin to 8 pin with one of the molex adapters supplied.

Pretty good idea! will probably void you're warranty though

Re: 6 pin in an 8 pin? will the gpu work?

Ahh, the psu is going on for just over 2 years old now. And I don't think it would void the warranty on the GPU if there was one of the adapters missing out of the box if I had to return it. A 6 pin to 8 Pin braided adapter from scan is just over a tenner delivered (to expensive in my mind) and I don't wish to use one with the yellow wires showing and not braided.

You could return the GPU for a full refund stating false advertising? You could then get a 7950 with a 6 and 8 pin connector.

It might turn on but do you really want to risk frying your card ?

If it were me, I would return it under DSR. Just get a card you know you can run. Or you could invest in a newer PSU?

I really have no idea why they do that, even at an extreme overclock it is never going to need that much power..

Can you really fry your card by supplying too little juice?

Now I don't know for certain but I would have thought that you would just supply an insufficient amount of power to the cars and basically make it unstable. At least that's how it works out in my head.
