    Poor performance on 7950, suggestions?

Hi I recently got hold of a 7950 to replace my gtx460 however I am struggling with a rather annoying issue. V-sync seems broken, I have it set in my games no problem it does go to 60fps however taking one game (it happens in EVERY GAME) League of Legends, easy performance on my gtx460 and always stayed at 60(give or take 2fps), the 7950 seems to get to 60fps and stays there for a bit but when I scroll around the screen or anything happens it will intermittently go down anywhere to 45FPS and take a second or two to get back to 60. The card is only running at like 50% as its an extremely easy game to run it doesnt even clock up much at all ( it goes to 500mhz core) it just seems odd that it cant hold 60fps. All my games feel off because of this, starcraft used to be fluid but I cant even maintain that 60fps (its slightly worse). Borderlands 2 also seems to be quite dire in performance, I was OK on my 460 but on this 7950 I go indoors and drop from 60fps to 15/20fps relatively quickly and it takes an age to get back up, however the gpu usage goes down to <60% when the FPS drops.

Any suggestions? I havent used an amd card since my 4850 which worked fine so I am unsure if there are any tweeks I need to make. I have tried catalyst 13.3 and 13.2 drivers, will be trying older ones tonight when I get chance though.

Sounds like the card is waiting for CPU in those instances, which could be a driver problem. Remnants of old drivers lying around?

Hicks, it does sound like driver issues, Kal is on the money (as ever) but with your Core i5 you'd think it has enough balls.

Have you uninstalled the nVidia drivers with Add Remove programs before putting the AMD gpu in? And did you get the latest driver from AMD's site?

Do you have a spare hard drive? If so would you consider a quick Win7 (no need to register it.. quick test) install fresh, and just add one game onto it and try?

Sounds like the card is maybe throttling too much, you could use GPUZ and have it record the gpu clock while you're gaming.
Could also try forcing 4x super sampling AA in the catalyst control and see what happens.

Re: Poor performance on 7950, suggestions?

Another quick check for throttling is to up the power tune limit in OverDrive to +30% or so and see if it makes any difference.

13.3 and 13.2 are both beta drivers right? I don't know if they contain the full set of files needed, so once you've done a driver sweep I'd start with the proper WHQL 13.1 package.

Re: Poor performance on 7950, suggestions?

Yeah I was siding with the driver issue and seems it probably is . I did remove the Nvidia drivers by booting into save mode uninstalling everything and using driver sweeper to make sure. I will try that method again see if it improves if not I will just quickly run a fresh windows on it.

Ill have to try later tomorrow as I am busy atm sorting out work, thanks for the suggestions .

Edit: Oh and I doubt its throttling, I have it monitored via MSI afterburner overlay so I can see the usage ingames and the clock speed for say borderlands never goes down from 960mhz even in when the fps dives so I cant see it being throttled. I will try the WHQL package Kalniel.
