Left my machine d/l'ing overnight.
Turned on monitor in the morning - purple dots, turning to yellow lines on subsequent restarts...
The culprit, my two month old (30 day warranty) Retek 9700 (which came flashed to Pro...!)
Anybody had any experience with this or similar? A trawl around the web proved inconclusive as to its b0rkedness.

Tried sticking it in another machine? Another graphics card to try putting in? Took the graphics card, made sure that was no dust/dirt, and put it back in again?
Its 99% definatly the card. Most likely it has overheated. A lot of the retek cards being ones sent back by users, that may have changed the cooler and overclocked them. Thats not saying the card was in any way damaged by the prev user, or when you got it, if it worked it worked - things dont just die.
However if it is permently damaged by overheating and still under warrenty then you should send it back for a full refund.
If its not under wareny any more (only 90days iirc, or 30? I think my 9500 from retek was 90? cant rememebr - says on the site..) then you cant really do anything - but they might take it back if you ask nicley
If its not in warrnety take the cooler off and look at the print left on the core by the thermal paste which should cover the whole core. Also look for any burn marks on it.
Graphics corruption @ boot happens for loads of resons but overheating is the main one if theres no other reson why it might b0rk.
You could also make sure theres no dust on the pcb or anything shorting any traces.
Also look at the floppy conenctor and check the pins are still shiny. If the connection is lose then it will arc, which will oxidise the connector and cause a very bad conenction, which usually will make it crash and stuff.

This card has been fiddled with before I got it. I'm not amused. :mad:
Just to add - I have arctic silvered it and replaced the hsf, but no joy.
Even if its out of warranty, if it was shipped to you in a sub-standard state that caused it to fail outside of warranty, you can probably pressure them.Quote:

And ati are as much to blame for using such crappy coolers, and making them so hard to mount properly - but then thats the same or all comapnys.
Retek are a good company, its just unlucky that you got a bad card.
If you want to try again getting it to work:
Clean around the gpu to remove any as3 or other pastes.
reapplly the heatsink using plenty of non-conductive paste
Fix the heatsink on, making sure there is good even pressure against the core. move the cooler around if you can, to squash out the paste.
I also think that if it was shipped in a substandard state you should be entitled to a replacement. Warranty or not, goods must be fit for the purpose for which they were sold.
