New heat-sink to silence GTX 460 SC
I have a GTX 460 SC and recently I have noticed how loud the fan gets after some gaming.
What are my options for aftermarket heat-sinks that would drastically reduce the noise levels.
I have a mini itx rig, with the Cooler Master 120 Elite case (in case that can help)
Im also hoping I could maybe overclock the card a little more with a new heatsink and fans.
I don't have a huge budget so £50 is my absolute maximum, under £40 or £35 would be great.

A number of options out there depending on your budget. Someone else asked recently, here are some that actually specify the 460 in the description. Other coolers are out there but I can't comment on their compatibility at this time. :)

Is it maybe not worth me spending on a better heatsink and maybe saving up to replace the card in the next 6 months or so?
This is the first Graphics card ive ever bought so not entirley too sure how much longer it is good for.

That is up to you. I would say you would have to spend at least £150 to get a decent upgrade. But if the FPS and details of the games are fine by you, there is no reason you HAVE to upgrade. You will be able to play virtually any PC game for the foreseeable future at varying graphic levels and frame rates.
I had a GTX460 GS GLH it was a very decent card. I could play almost every game at 1920x1080 at medium-high settings. Many of the high end cards these days are pure overkill for most people just doing single monitor 1080p gaming and the FPS gains are more for bragging rights than any discernible difference.

Thank you for that, I think I'm going to try abs look for more coolers that may allow me to overclock the card more whilst having silent fans. The card does seem decent enough for the time being for any game I'm playing and I'm not really a serious gamer anyway.

Does the fan speed drop if you play with the top cover of the case removed?
Small cases are hard to get good airflow in, and if the card can only get warm air to cool itself then the fan will be working harder.

Yes the fan speed does drop a little when the cover of the case is removed.
With the cover on i got a maximum temp of 79C (I left HW monitor on all day or normal and gaming use and checked it every hour or so), this drops to 70C with the cover off.
If i was to remove the plastic shroud over the heatsink and add two additional fans in front of the heatsink and stock fan, would this help to bring more cool air? And lower temps? They would be silent fans.

This should help.

It will vent the hot air from the case.
