    GTX 770 OR 7970 GHz

I have been trawling through benchmarks and reviews, yet still unsure which way to go.

These cards are very close, main things that set them apart would be the use of PhysX by ArmAIII and the reduced power consumption of the 770.

No idea. Can anyone provide a convincing argument as to which option to go for?

Go for the best price/cooler. Or, is there any chance of waiting until the AMD 8970 (9970) is released ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: GTX 770 OR 7970 GHz

My 4870 is on its last legs so I wanted to get a card to use throughout the summer, but news of the 8970 launching mid-October is tempting...

Going for the best price/ cooler is sound advice, I'll keep that in mind if I choose not to wait for the 8970.

Re: GTX 770 OR 7970 GHz

Well it depends whether you prefer the free games/compute abilities of the 7970 or the PhysX/CUDA/power/temp/heat of the 770.
Are there any particular games that you play?

I wouldn't wait for the 8970, we have no idea when that will really launch or what it will be like.

Re: GTX 770 OR 7970 GHz

I was just thinking that £300 is quite an investment. Both the 770 and the 7970 are old (!) designs now, and if you're buying a high-end card then just before a new release may not be the best timing.

Re: GTX 770 OR 7970 GHz

If we get a new AMD card this year it is going to be based on the 7790 architecture, not anything new.
Now that brought some benefits to the low end and is capable of bringing benefits to the high end too, but it's not going to be a game changer.

The 20nm proper next gen stuff is not going to hit in October.

28nm GCN2.0 will more then likely be what we see next from AMD, that would be a new chip. The 20nm stuff could be just a shrink from 28nm GCN2.0 with GCN3.0 on 20nm and a shrink to 14nm.

Whatever process the next round of chips are on they will be new.

Yes, just like the 7790 was a new chip. Anything that comes out before Christmas is going to be based on that same architecture.

Re: GTX 770 OR 7970 GHz

    Free games are a bonus.

Whilst I understand the current offerings are re-branded boards, I am upgrading from a 4870 so the impact will be more than noticeable. Considering the state of my card I need to seriously consider a new build this Summer.

The AMD offering in October (if that is the case) will likely be a re-branding competitively priced against nVidia, so I don't feel that I would be missing out all that much.

Games I am interested are predominantly running on Bohemia's engine, ArmAIII, DayZ Standalone. Other games such as Rome 2: Total War/ GTA V are also interesting.

I can actually see 20nm based parts coming out same time next year.

Yeah Rome II is something I am very interested in. If it's anything like Shogun 2 it should run noticeably faster on Nvidia cards.
15% faster in the case of the 770 vs 7970GE.

I'm looking at the HD7970, GTX770 and GTX680 and for me it comes down to price. I'm expecting a price war over the next month so I'm holding off buying.

Why would AMD wait until Q4 if the next round is GCN1.1 and on the same process?

The only thing the HD7790 hints at is 20nm might not be ready this year and is a test bed a little like the HD4770. AMD have plenty of room to improve on 28nm.

20nm wont be ready till Q4 2013 - TSMC haven't fully installed the equipment yet!

Re: GTX 770 OR 7970 GHz

The 7790 only launched 2 months ago, it wouldn't be that unusual to have several months between launches on the same process/architecture.
The 680 launched almost exactly a year earlier and Nvidia launched other models as late as October.

It's clear that 20nm won't make this year, but should be around first half 2014. I can't really see AMD releasing a major refresh just 6 months earlier. Especially as we have only seen a single GCN1.1 part. Note that GCN1.1 is not AMDs own nomenclature.

Going to hold out till the end of June, as I am also waiting for Intel's Haswell line to come through. Let's see if AMD feel the need to be more competitive.

Gigabyte do make solid components and their cooler is pretty good, I am just a little miffed that the stock cooler is too expensive for vendors to use.
