    PhysX with AMD

I've heard you can use a separate nvidia gpu to handle PhysX processing (for nvidia cards)
Would you be able to use this idea to get physx effects using an amd card as the primary? (if so I might be slightly gutted for opting for a 670 over a 7950/70 ^_^)

Yeah u can, with Hybrid Physx. Whether it's worth the hassle is up to u tho...

    Re: PhysX with AMD

It really does depend on the nVidia card used to carry the load, in some cases doing this will actually slow down and act as a bottleneck to the more powerful card. There is a good video about this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbww3dhzK0M

How applicable it is to the use of AMD + Nvidia I am not too sure.

    Re: PhysX with AMD

Why gutted with the 670? It's a great card that will continue to age well as it has. What games do you intend on playing which require heavy PhysX acceleration out of interest? In my experience it really doesn't make much difference in all but a handful of titles, and very few of those are worthy of your time anyway.

    Re: PhysX with AMD

Just cos it seems like I could've gotten the same performance (or better) and perhaps saved some money too. But I guess at that time most reviews and benchmarks showed the 670 to be slightly ahead (Damn you amd drivers!)

Games with PhysX include Borderlands2, mirrors edge, planet side 2 and batman.

    Re: PhysX with AMD

Both are excellent cards, you pay a little extra for the 670 but in return it'll run a touch more frugally.

He keeps using the term "fast" which is a bit misleading, physx is a highly parallel process, if I remember correctly, it's more about available streams than gpu or ram speed, yes speed does factor in but not as much as the stream count.
The 8600gs is only a 32 stream card the gtx550ti is a 192 stream card, so that's a massive step up.

The best budget option for a physx card is a GT 630 Kepler version (GK208) with 348 streams not the other version which is a rebranded GT440 (GF108) with only 96 streams, or the GK107 with 192 streams although this version is probably ok but the gk208 is much better for physx

Do you reckon adding a 630 to a 670 would make a noticeable difference?

    Re: PhysX with AMD

I would suggest marginal to no improvement for the outlay. But that's not scientific.

A few years back I tried using a GTX280 as a dedicated Physx card with a GTX580 and aside from an eyewatering increase in power consumption it made bugger-all difference even in Mafia.

    Re: PhysX with AMD

Depends on the game and the amount of physx used, most games just use it for a bit of extra prettiness, normally just some debris from explosions that get pushed around when you run into it, but it's all non-existent objects, purely client side on multiplayer games.

You can get minor boosts in some games, nut it's only ever minor, as that video from LinusTechTips show he's getting about a 5fps boost in mafia2 on highest physx settings

Sure, if you are running a game that uses Physx and the 670 isn't powerful enough to handle the gfx and Physx....

There are no simple answers to this question and with the amount (or lack of) physx titles, you might as well look at it on a title by title basis..

    Re: PhysX with AMD

That's actually a good point, which I didn't think about.. But I was more thinking for the future. Batman is the only game where I don't get a stable 60fps ^_^

But it does mean that choosing amd over nvidia could be easier for some people then.

That's good to know. My intention is to be playing a lot of ArmA III with my new build so I'll be heading down the nVidia route.
