[I'm too new to post a URL. Plug "3ds vray render graphics card" into Google and look at the results. There were a number of threads on Tom's Hardware. I didn't look any further, but of course, there were other responses.
(URL deleted) is just one of a number of threads on the subject. Responses range from "graphics cards don't matter" (just quoting!), to "go for a high end Quaddro."
Graphics cards matter because 3ds max can do GPU acceleration. There's 3 options, really: 1) Go with a GTX 780 and be content with nforce drivers. 2) Cheat, and get a GTX 680 and modify the hardware to fake a K4000 to enable the use of the superior Quadro drivers, although I can't speak to the legality of this, given recent retarded anti-cryptobreaking laws this might be a grey area. Or 3) Get the stupidly expensive Quadro K4000.
And if this is mission critical work then you will want all the certification etc. that you get with proper quadro cards/drivers. On the other hand their vast expense becomes a business expense which might help.
Couple of things to note: demand is very dependent on what you are rendering, but generally Vray rendering on a graphics card requires a lot of graphics card ram, recommended is a video card with at least 2gb of ram and the more cuda cores the better. (vray is one of those things that works better on nvidia cards)
If you're doing small scale external modelling, ie you could be rendering a highly detailed object in a simplistic scene, then memory demand will tend to be lower, but at the same if you are doing large environment modelling, ie a less detailed but big open landscape scene, then your Vram demand is going to be far higher.
The Quadro k5000 3GB is a great card but it's around £1500 and in some situations the Quadro 6000 6GB at over £3000 is better even though it's older with less cores some rendering jobs can actually be hampered by the lack of vram and memory bandwidth.
When you start moving down the range it gets more interesting in the £350-400 range you have the gtx680 4gb vs the Quadro K2000D 2gb
In terms of specs the gtx680 kicks the k2000d's butt, however the difference is in the drivers and quality and support.
3d rendering put different load requirements on a card and the quadro's are better suited to this long term load than the geforce.
With the drivers the k2000d will far outperform the gtx680 in OpenGL viewport performancebut the extra cores and vram will give the gtx680 4gb the edge in vray rendering, esp in more heavy load/complex scenes.
Which makes it a far harder call
