Switching to amd. Leave Physx installed?

Looks like I will be switching back to amd for graphics soon. Would I need to uninstall Physx? I remember switching from Nvidia back to AMD in the past and uninstalled Physx. But some games wouldn't launch because Physx files were missing. I mean, that sorta gives me my answer. But I'm not sure if that was an unusual case. AMD cards don't use Physx right? Don't want it sitting there installed if there's no need for it..

I have AMD graphics card and yes, you are correct AMD cards don't use Physx. IF the games requires it, leave it installed as I had MMORPG game installed few weeks ago depends on physX installed before I can launch it to run. Didn't like the game so uninstalled both game and physx as I don't have any other games I own that depends on PhysX.

Yeh I think I'll probably leave it installed if it's not going to cause any problems. Just wasn't sure if it would cause any issues with an amd card..

Games which use PhysX as their physics engine can still use the CPU, and often install it when it's not on the machine anyway. So you can keep it around, it wont cause any problems.

Actually, I have metro 2033 but not installed in the Steam library so I do own at least one game with a physx.

That interesting, uses CPU for PhysX processing.

I've always had PhysX installed with my Radeon, think you'll want to hold onto it. Shouldn't cause any issues.

I'd say uninstall it like you would with drivers

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm probably actually going to leave it installed. Unless anyone thinks it can cause problems with an amd card?

Most games install PhysX anyway so I would just leave it

PhysX is a software middleware, regardless of your graphics card, it's still used as the physics 'engine' for quite a few games. In most cases this is just CPU based.

Re: Switching to amd. Leave Physx installed?

If it's CPU based, is it best to configure it in the Nvidia control panel to always use the CPU? If I'm correct, many games rarely push beyond 50% load, so unload PhysX to the CPU should, in theory, allow the GPU to get on with making the skiny graphics?

It depends on the relative loads. PhysX is much slower on the CPU (for whatever reason...) so if a game uses a lot of it you will end up waiting for it and interupting the smoothness of game animations/display updating etc. But you're right, if the GPU is already the bottleneck (which it kind of should be for gaming) then adding more GPU load isn't going to do you any favours. At the end of the day you can only try both and chose which is better for a given game. But devs will in most cases be designing the games to play best with CPU physX because that's what most people will be running.

Ah, OK. So the games are becoming the controlling factor to whether PhysX is GPU or CPU powered? Could be interesting in the future...
