Should I bother using Intel Sandy Bridge graphics combined with my main gpu?

My 2500K has a built in graphics chip. I've only ever used the thing when I've been without a graphics card (hardly ever). But I remember when I first installed this cpu on an asrock board, I had some software called Lucid Virtue or something... I was kinda confused about the tech at the time and I never really used it. Anyway, I am running it ony my Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3. Just wondering if there is any benefit to setting up that software again, assuming it runs on my board? Also keeping in mind that I want the best performance possible for gaming and video editing. I wondered if the extra gpu power can actually help in these situations? Or would it just offer some nice power saving options when I'm just doing some web browsing or something? Either way, if there are some benefits without negative side affects, then I would be interested in trying it out!

    Hope you guys can help!

    Thanks

I assume this is a driver / software version of the OPTIMUS that laptops use to switch to the lower end card (CPU in this case) when not doing anything extreme to save power.

I very much doubt that 'adding' it to your current GPU will do anything other than cause driver issues while gaming and unless you want to save a few pence each day I say don't even bother with it ... My 2p.

I looked into this in some detail, a while ago, having a Z68 board too.

The Lucid Virtu system works insofar as it will switch to processor graphics to save power when in 2D mode, but will offer no real noticeable performance benefit. Some tests have shown the overhead actually reduces the performance of discreet GPUs.

Using it together slowed my gtx 680 something terrible i deactivated it and uninstalled the software.

I've heard other people get good results from it, also there are new versions of the software that may perform better.

Another user here with a 670, turned mine off long ago and just stick with the discrete GPU, used to find the software used to cause all kinds of driver issues in games and didn't always work as intended.

Some of the stuff you guys have said has jolted my memory a little. I think I did actually give it a go for a little bit and it may have caused me some problems which is why I stopped using it

The thing I wondered about that. Is how does it use the cpu's graphics when my dvi/hdmi cables are only coming from my pci-e gpu? Does it push them through that or something? lol it sounds silly to me. I actually don't get it :/

As above yes. It takes the frames generated and pushes the finished frame to the in use gpu. (Ie igpu to gpu, dmode) or (gpu to igpu imode) depending on where your monitor is wired to.

vsync/Hypervirtu mode is more or less a cheat (ie you really don't get more frames) it drops frames that will not be fully rendered in time (tearing effects etc) and moves on to the next one. As software like benchmarks don't normally see this happen it still counts the frames even though you skipped them.

That's interesting. Thanks Well I just remembered also that having the igpu enabled, can affect the stability of the cpu overclock. Though I may be wrong. Feels like it's all starting to come back to me now haha..

From my experience lucid virtu caused graphical bugs within quite a few games. I would not bother with it.
