2 SLi or 1 powerful GPU

I'm not sure how SLI work but I know it use two card GPU to produce 1 monitor right?
    I need 3-4 monitor (1 Full HD, 3 HD)
    Occasionally play games (COD)
Often play Full HD content, plus little editing
only got just over 300w left (using TX650M)
Corsair 300R Case, Asus Z87 pro mobo and intel 4670K
    thx in adv

Go for a powerful, single, GPU - less chance of driver-related problems and those odd instances where multi GPU scaling is woeful. Multi-GPU setups are better now than ever before but, unless I was pushing for max detail on a hi-res triple display setup, I'd go single GPU every time.

another vote for a single GPU - whats your budget? a good choice right now is the AMD HD 7950 (or even a 7870XT) - GTX 780 are a lot of money , the GTX 770 is nearly as quick for quite a lot less (£200 less)

thx, will look for single powerful GPU, didn't thought about driver/software side additional problems

if it SLi I was thinking sub £150 each
    a single GPU sub £250

I haven't been into PC GPU for a long time.
does Nvidia still have problem of over heating and breakdown?
cox my Asus W7 only lasted 2 yrs becox the GPU burn my mobo hence laptop dead! (this was 5 yrs ago)
I have 2 lap top nvidia GT620M and HD4570, both of which is hot when loading!
Also burnt my 7900GTX (lasted 4 yrs) not too bad

GTX660s do work really really well, you could pick up 2 of them for just £260 and get GTX770+ levels of performance.

These newer cards don't run hot, especially in a roomy case like a 300R.

Re: 2 SLi or 1 powerful GPU

    £250 wont get you a GTX 770 - let alone the £550 gtx 780.

for that budget I would look at either an AMD HD 7950 or for a small amount more £10 or so) - a GTX 670.

best bang for your buck the GTX 670 IMO

Re: 2 SLi or 1 powerful GPU

+1 on a single, powerful card. But as Willzzz points out above, you can get more power than a high end card using two mid-range cards and most of the time you would not run into problems.

If you do go down the multi GPU route I 'd have to recommend Nvidia at this time, since AMD are having real problems fixing the micro-stuttering issues on their Crossfire setups.

If you go for a single card solution, then you are likely to get slightly more bang-per-buck with AMD for your budget, although as HalloweenJack points out above, Nvidia have dropped their 6 series prices a little since the 770 came out so you might find some good deals if you shop around.

No brainer really, that's a good £70 cheaper than the cheapest 670s were a few months back.

Re: 2 SLi or 1 powerful GPU

I'd just go one card as there is not really any games at the moment that will stretch a 780 or a 680 for that matter.

Just one thing I have done crossfire on more than one occasion and I have never had a problem but I suppose it might not be the same for everyone

If you can stretch to around £300 for the single GPU, you're within shouting distance of a 770. If you plan to go for three screens, perhaps consider the 4GB EVGA GTX 670 FTW+ edition. The extra memory could help, and it's more or less on par with a 680/770 for performance.

For a single screen, get as much horsepower as possible.

As always with GPUs, buy the absolute best you can afford.
