Evga gtx 780 sc coil whine

I have posted in the care section of these forums, but thought i may as well post here also.
Long story short i have taken it back into Scan but they couldn't find a fault. So i've got video evidence,
which i hope is going to result in me getting it swapped. There's clearly something wrong with this card
and i cant put up with this noise anymore to be honest. See link below.

Re: Evga gtx 780 sc coil whine

Leaving aside spamming to get a post count to post a link.....

What constitutes a fault? Many electronic components, particularly transformers and chokes, emit mechanical noise - that doesn't mean it is faulty.

Abnormal noise might indicate a fault, particularly if it suddenly changes on a particular device, but to determine what is abnormal, you would need to listen to several cards to see if they are quieter - you might find some are noisier as there will be variations from card to card, or manufacturing batch to manufacturing batch.

Is the card otherwise functioning in accordance with the published specifications? If the answer is yes, and the specs don't mention noise, you don't have much recourse.

Can you demonstrate that it it noisier than other cards? If you can, you might be able to get it changed. How long have you had the card?

Re: Evga gtx 780 sc coil whine

Hardly spamming, I made 5 quick replies in threads that caught my eye. Was it so I could post a link, yes.. but how else was I supposed to demonstrate my issue.

I am completely aware that it isn't classed as a fault. How am i going to demonstrate that it is noisier than other cards?
I got the card the day after it was released by Scan, around June 6th or something.. Phage, I get the noise when I'm playing any game. Note I have sound proofing
in my case and I can still hear it.

The card is functioning perfectly fine aside the fact of this coil whine, I appreciate it is a bit of a grey area I just assumed I would be able to get it swapped having spent
a considerable amount of money with Scan and £612 on this particular card. I doubt it's just me who would want to return something that's making such an awful noise.
I can't find any information or published specs on its noise levels or any decibel readings.

Re: Evga gtx 780 sc coil whine

It comes down to goodwill unfortunately, unless it's advertised as a quiet card or something and you can prove it's solely down to the card and not the quality of power etc. that you are feeding it. Scan are known for their good deals and low prices, but that probably means low margins and thus less room for goodwill swaps etc.

Thanks for your reply kalniel. I fully appreciate that and they've been more than helpful with me so far. Ultimately I would be completely
satisfied if I managed to get it swapped, then if it still makes the noise it would put my mind at ease knowing that its obviously some slight
incompatibility with another component in my system.

Re: Evga gtx 780 sc coil whine

If you identify the specific noisy component you could see if it was loose on the PCB or inadequately fixed, then you might be able to claim it is a manufacturing defect. If it is a fan, then that might indicate a faulty bearing.

If you had bought it by mail order, you could have returned it under the Distance Selling Regulations within 7 days for no stated reason, but you are out of that window now. (so not much help)

You might be able to claim that the noise makes it unfit for purpose, but unless you specifically asked for a quiet card at the time, again you are on shaky ground.

I'm not really sure what to do. I'm not very optimistic that going into the store waving my video evidence is going to get it swapped unless i request
    some managers discretion.

Ask nicely - be willing to compromise. What's the worst that can happen ?
You can always sell the card privately and get something else.

If I sell the card privately i'm likely to get nowhere near the amount i paid for it.

Re: Evga gtx 780 sc coil whine

If you want a comparison video, I have the same card...although not sure how you would normalise the outputs. Mine is very quiet and I cannot detect any whine (although if you are under 20, there is a chance I couldn't hear the whine you can!!)

As for "Is it defective?"....surely if you base your purchase on numerous reviews, all of which mention the quietness of the card, then surely that should be good enough to say it shouldn't be making a loud noise?

Although from the last few RMAs I had with Scan, you might be better off going direct with EVGA (if you can). I'm out of pocket nearly £100 because I went through Scan the last few times......their returns department seems to now be controlled by penny-pinching morons who see the short-term savings over the long-term gains.

Given you were able to take the card in in person, any chance you could just take your whole system down to Scan and show them it in situ?

They said i can't do that unless it was actually assembled by them or its a 3XS system. You have to take the parts in individually...
