Thumbs up AMD Radeon HD 9000 series

Guess what I found about the new beast.

    Also more info here http://gpuboss.com/graphics-card/Radeon-HD-9970

As always, you have to take these with a grain of salt. Assuming they're accurate, however, the Radeon HD 9970 will wield a 20nm Volcanic Islands GPU codenamed Hawaii. It will feature a 1GHz clockspeed, 4GB of memory clocked at 5GHz (effective) on a 512-bit bus, 64 GPixels, 307GB/s memory bandwidth, 4,096 shader units, 256 texture mapping units, and 64 render output processores.

Compared to the Titan and even the GTX 780, the 9970 looks promising, if not downright impressive. Now the waiting game begins to see if the final product comes close to what's been leaked online. How long might that be? Several weeks ago, it was reported that Radeon HD 9970 samples had already started shipping out to manufacturers. That card, along with other parts in the Radeon HD 9000 Series, are all expected to launch around October 2013.

So what do you guys think ?

I thought it's going to be 89xx series next?

Anyways, I'm looking to replace my aging 6970 so I can try eyefinity with playable framerates.

Re: AMD Radeon HD 9000 series

The 8xxx series GPU's have already been released. Only to OEMs.

OEMs wanted new cards to market. So to appease the OEMs a rebranding of 6xxx & 7xxx series GPU's were rolled out as "new" products. Even though they are the same.

    I know... its so wrong

Well I am waiting for the 9870 or 9850 because I am very sure that I can't afford 9970.

I think baloney This is based on the rumour back in May isn't it? Just repeating a rumour doesn't make it any more accurate http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-H...3-351659.shtml

If I remember correctly, it's even based on a joke picture that someone spoofed up in a forum.

Well, the only ways to get more memory bandwidth at the minute are to either increase the transfer rates, or increase the bus width. At 6Gbps GDDR5, AMD are already sailing close to their own limits for transfer rates, which only really leaves them with an increased bus: and since they'll need to feed twice as many shaders (if the rumours are true) they'll need dollops more bandwidth. Plus there's economies to think of: is it going to be cheaper for them to use a smaller number of very highly rated memory chips, or a larger number of lower rated memory chips? It's just possible that we've hit the point where 12 7Gbps+ chips are actually just as expensive as 16 5Gbps chips, and the latter produces a lot more bandwidth. So a 512bit bus @ 5Gbps might work out to be more effective than a 384bit bus @ 7Gbps, whilst costing the same...

4gb memory, will be nice for multi-monitor setups!
