So I'm building my first pc which I desperately need now, but read that the new AMD 99xx are coming out in October. Meanwhile I still need a GPU.
Could anyone recommend a good gpu for playing games like BF3 at medium settings so I could upgrade to the new cards when they're out? Or should I just get a 7950/GTX670 (both cost £180-200 ish) or better now?
Just to add, do you guys think that the 7950 will fall in price significantly when the new cards come out in case I was planning to buy one now and then sell it to upgrade in like a months time?
Hey, personally I would go with gtx670 as if I'm correct is slightly faster. But amd is a good choice if you want any of the games from the bundle attached to it. So it's up to you :-). They are both great cards. Regarding the pricing, I wouldn't expect much bigger price drop as I think that with new price tag amd is trying to push out remaining stock. It's just my speculations so feel free to correct me guys.
The 670 isn't faster. Both 670 and 7950 cards are good.
You'd have no problem with BF3 at ultra on these cards. BF4 on the other hand may be more demanding.
Will echo what teppic said, The 7950 was a bit behind the 670 when the amd drivers were not that mature, Now though any difference is negligible and some games will have either card ahead. Go with the green team if you want extras like phsyx, Other than that both are very good quality cards. Firstly what resolution are you going to be playing at?
Secondly what other games are you going to play?
As BF3 is highly optimised and can run on lower cards at full graphical settings, such as the HD 7850/7870@1080P for example which is significantly cheaper.
Match your card with the games you play otherwise you'll waste your money ;)

The 7950 is a good GPU indeed. We used them quite a bit in numerous gaming events (like E3, gamescom, PAX) last year with our partners (btw this year we used the 7970), and it still delivers great performance. And with your budget in mind, I feel it will be a good choice. That being said, and as you can imagine, when companies release new products, existing product prices drop a little...so, if you are willing to wait a little longer, you may get the 7950 for a cheaper price.

I dont think you should go for any of the 6xx GeForce series now. All their 7xx series are better priced and their performance is better too compared to their predecessors (and better than 7950 in some cases).
Im also currently considering something around the GTX 760 - 7950 price range. Its a hard decision tbh.
TressFX, game bundles and future console optimization on the side for AMD
then there is nvidia coming out with their optimizations on splinter cell, physX, and the more recent The Witcher 3 nvidia exclusive CUDA fur tech... (which when enabled almost halfs the frame rates on a Titan...)
Pretty sure also that once AMD releases their line-up next month, nVidia will come up with Ti versions -_-

Yeah I agree. Games bundle is what pulls me away from nvidia. Just not sure whether price would drop more or not.
The 760/770s are just rebadged 670s and 680s (though the 760 is actually poorer than the 670).
Newer games may well make use of the extra VRAM available on the 7950. For the games you list, you need a card of that class even at 1080p for higher settings. The 7950 isn't likely to drop much more in price, it's very low compared to what it was a month ago. It's the best performer for the money, has the best specs, and overclocks very well. The 670 only really has PhysX over it, which not many games use.
Idk, I was myself considering the 760 vs 7950. Even if the 760 has lower RAM and bus width, it manages to do well overall compared to the 7950, if you check the following images.Quote:

Those benchmarks are a load of rubbish. It's been said a lot - you need to ignore any that use reference 7950s and old drivers. Here's a more up to date comparison:

And that's before an overclock on the 7950, which will add a huge amount more than you can get on the 760.
