Need to buy a new gpu this weekend, has to be shorter than 260mm as well...
Hey,
As above, since I'm looking at doing a new build, with a bit more effort going to towards how it looks etc rather than purely on how it performs, I thought I might end up upgrading my gpu, since while it does the job (GTX570) it's rather loud, and extra power at 1440p wouldn't hurt....
So, if I'm going to get a new card I'd like to get a 'nice' one, what are my options?
I remember having a phantom card for a while which was lovely, so I was thinking of something along those lines?
Ideally looking for black/white/orange to fit in with the theme (obviously doesn't have to be all 3)
No strict budget at the moment, depends what options there are, what people think would be a suitable match for 1440p. I'm downgrading to a 760k which may affect your choices :)
My PSU will be a silverstone sfx 450W.
Thanks
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
Depends on how much you want to spend. The new AMD cards have just come out and are sort of forcing a price drop on nVidia side.
780 or the new 290X that is coming out would be the best bet on the high end... waiting on reviews and official pricing on the 290X to see where it stands contender wise otherwise you are looking at the nVidia 770 or AMD 280X which are pretty similar and in the £200+ range.
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
I'm not sure what a 760K is, nor do I know the details of the 12V rail for your PSU. If the 12V rail isn't that strong, then I would probably avoid the titan type cards, and maybe the 290 - we've yet to learn about power consumption. And stick to tahiti/keplar class cards as they're a bit easier on the PSU, so probably a gtx 770.
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
AMD 760k, equivalent to the 6800k but without the gpu bit.
By nice I meant 'premium', like a phantom, rather than performance wise.
As a rough guide £200 seems ok, can't see myself spending more.
In the end I can keep my current card, just that I've been noticing the noise more and more recently, and if I'm going to put some effort into how my build looks etc, it seems silly to leave that card in there. The idea is to solve the noise problem, and I may as well get a performance increase whilst I'm at it :)
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
7950/670/760 can all be picked up under 100 at the moment with custom coolers. 7970/770 are nearer 250 for the custom versions. Colour wise maybe the zotax cards suit, but tbh you're better getting a good one than one the right colour
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
I still think you should just get a new motherboard for your current CPU!!:P
HD7970 cards can be had for around £210 to £220.

Better is relative though, since from a money point of view I'd be better not getting a new card at all :P

Haha but the sale of the cpu helps cover the cost of some of the other bits :P (which cost more than the bits they're replacing)
And don't tempt me, I keep having doubts, I'll live and learn :P
Worst comes to worst I can always use them in a HTPC/server type build :P
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
There are two versions of the SFX450 psu. The ST45SF (FSP built) has 432w on the 12v rail and the ST45SF-G (Enhance Electronics built) has 444w on the 12v rail. What cpu are you going for, 4670K?
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
Was planning on getting this one:

As I mentioned further up, an AMD 760k.

Have you tried blowing the dust out of the heatsink? Saying you just noticed the noise makes me wonder if it didn't used to be so bad, and the fan has to work much harder if the heatsink is clogged. Best done outside, can get messy :D
Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu
You should think about getting accelero twin turbo II gpu cooler. Its silent even on 100% rpm and your gpu will run 5-10 degrees cooler.
P.S. Owned one on my old GTX560 Ti, cant say any bad word about it.

I haven't, but the card has never been quiet, I've just started caring about it slightly more, and will care about it a lot more in my new build (probably) since I'm putting more effort into it.
It's a reference 480 cooler, not known for it's low noise levels :P I'll probably still give it a go though :)

I could get an aftermarket cooler, but I don't overl want to spend money on this card, since it's a little dodgy regardless (I don't think I can run it at stock clocks anymore, have to overvolt/underclock slightly) :P
I could however get a standard new card and put an aftermarket cooler on it, depending on size etc...

That cooler is is quite high, make sure your case width is at least 210mm if you are using side fan.

This graphics card, the GTX 650 Ti is very good for the price:
