    Graphics card which one.....

    Hello Everyone,

This is my first post on here and hopefully not my last.

As you can tell i am in the market for a graphics card, I currently have on order for my new system the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Superclocked, which from the reviews I have seen keeps up with the titan on most reviews.
However with the impending release of the AMD R9 290X I know we will be able to make a better decision tomorrow when the card is released and all the reviews are posted.

I will be upgrading from a HD 3870 as it has done me justice for all the years I have had the card however it is starting to struggle now.

So opinions on a post please
Pros and cons for each as I am not considering the GXT 780Ti reason is from what I’ve understood it’s an improved overclock of the 780. If I am wrong please correct me.

    Regards,
    Damadarxx

I would agree; wait and see. How big is your monitor? AMD has been showing off the 290x at high resolutions so it may impact your decision. The top end of the market seems reasonably similar and if you're using your card for as long as your 3870 I imagine it narrow down in no time at all.

    Re: Graphics card which one.....

I have an Samsung sync master 24" @ 1920x1200 I am not currently able to look at changing monitors however multi-screen gaming does not interest me.

I have been told by many that the Nvidia drivers and support is better in comparison.

    Cheers.

That keeps coming up but I always found both company's drivers both as good (or as bad) as each other.

However, Nvidia did have a lot of problem with hardware at one point. So if you had bought an Nvidia card of the same vintage as your old HD3870 (released late 2007) it would probably have died a few years ago just like my 8800GT did. Plenty of people suffered from that one but Nvidia pretty much wiggled out of liability (except in the US after a lawsuit).

But I suspect that a lot of people's thinking goes like this:
Nvidia = more expensive = they must be better.
I've never subscribed to that kind thinking though.

I remember about that, wasn’t it an issue with the solider that was used in the card construction, Incorrect heat Torrance?

I want the best card that will last me for a good few years like my HD 3870 has done, i understand that after 2-3 i may not being every game on ultra but thats the nature of progress.

5am embargo lift on the 290X so reviews will be all over the net tomorrow. Wait till then (and official pricing) before making your choice... well thats my plan anyway

    Re: Graphics card which one.....

Dooms' answer is of course correct. It would be mad to come to a decision on a high-end card until the 290X is out. If nothing else, Nvidia should have to drop their prices. If the rumoured 290 (non X) prices are true, the Geforce 770 will have to drop too (well it as already 30% more than the 280X despite being roughly the same speed).

Yes, they picked the wrong lead-free solder. Too brittle. But it wasn't the cards, it was the solder/underfill which secures the silicon to its package. The difference being that a 10mm * 10mm silicon die (i.e. 100mm²) might have 1000 pins. Obviously, there is physically no way you can have that amount of pins in such a small area so the chip gets packaged into something much large. It was in the packaging where teh solder was badly chosen and would crack. And there is the packaging jno real way to replace that. That's why those reflows didn't. Re-melting solder which is inherently bound to fail is just a stop-gap fix.

I do not agree that nVidia drivers (and support) is any better than AMD. Just go to both forums and you will see they both have issues. The saving grace is with AMD you will be less out of pocket.

    Re: Graphics card which one.....

Just saw a leak that showed the 290X @ 500 euros, which is about £430. We will find out tomorrow but if this is true the fight it on.
No doubt we need to add tax to it so its about £520, which is less exciting and then we can get excited about the 290's price/performance

This is exactly what we need. Proper competition between AMD and nVidia can only be good for us consumers. AMD have always been good for price, but if all the hype is to believed then performance is neck and neck with nVidia. Do not always believe the hype though.

Unless you're a Linux user, in which case Nvidia's proprietary driver is far superior to AMD's Catalyst. If you're just running Windows then agreed, there's not enough in it to make a difference.

I have never used Linux so cannot comment on the reliability. Always used windows and have moved between ATI/AMD and nVidia, suffered the same frustrations on both.

Traditionally nVidia have been the main company behind the innovative new technologies, such as PhysX, 3D Vision and CUDA. However, it seems that that may be changing now as of AMD's GCN, with them releasing new technologies such as TressFX and Mantle. As is, I would probably suggest an nVidia card, but it looks like that may change soon...

Since your bumping this old thing, firstly it needs clearing up that the 780TI is not just an OC GTX780 but in fact the full fat gk110 chip ie more cores than Titan.
Second price/performance king is the R9 290 in the top end as the difference between that and the 290X does not justify the extra billies.
But, and it's a big 'un, there is something dodgy be it hardware or driver issue causing black screen crashes on the 290/290X for many users. Oh and they are hot and noisy. I would personally wait until these issues are cleared and the custom aib versions are released before buying anything top end right now.

    Re: Graphics card which one.....

780ti does seem to blow the 780 out the water, however it has a hefty price. Maybe wait until the 290X gets aftermarket coolers and see if the chip actually delivers.
