Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GeForce GTX 770 OC

I currently have a MSI 560Ti and suffering from system freezes on drivers after 314.22. I am thinking of upgrading and would like your opinion on the following 2 cards:

    Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 Overclocked Windforce 3X

Which would you buy and why?

Re: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GeForce GTX 770 OC

I would probably get the R9 280X,as it is cheaper and IMHO the extra VRAM might prove useful for some games.

Re: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GeForce GTX 770 OC

I might just make the leap back to AMD. The 280X do look like great value for money.

Re: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GeForce GTX 770 OC

280x for value, GTX 770 for better performance.

You can probably find 7970s for cheaper than a 280x and you'll get the same card as the 280x is just a rebranded 7970. Check Scan for their today deals. I've seen some 7970s for under 200 squid

I'd be getting the 770 after having a AMD card it's just not as good so many little problems.

Re: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GeForce GTX 770 OC

I would also recommend having a look for good deals for 7970 3GB cards. Retailers are trying to clear stock of these cards, so in many cases are cutting prices. Therfore even though they perform the same as the R9 280X, they can be found for a fair bit cheaper and often come with nice aftermarket coolers.

Also, there are a couple of extra benefits going for the AMD option, particualrly the larger amount of VRAM and very interesting new AMD mantle.

Re: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GeForce GTX 770 OC

I've had to make exactly same choice and I've purchased gtx770. Both cards have similar performance, so it would depends on the specific game which is better. NVIDIA have PhysX and G-sync, AMD have Mantle. We know what PhysX does (not that great to be honest IMO) and both G-sync and Mantle will show in future.
Go with the best price card, I got mine gigabyte gtx770 for the same price as msi r9 280x.

Snap up a 7970 for the same performance as the 280x but 3 free games with never settle!

I've been looking around and it seems only ocuk and aria are doing that bundle with 7970s now. ocuk are overpriced on them and aria only have dodgy ones like xfx or powercolor.
If you have the cash at this moment either this MSI 7970 TFIII in today only @ scan for £210 or this (what I would go for) HIS @ ocuk for £234.

Yes, I'm a price/stock hunting monster at times They have the MSI 7970 TFIII with the bundle but it's not worth the extra £35 since most of the games can be bought for <£10 each.

Re: Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X OC or GeForce GTX 770 OC

Has anyone tried an R9 280x with the stock cooler? I like the idea of a cooler that exhausts the hot air out the back but I'm concerned about the potential noise.
