    ATI Catalyst Control Center Problems.

Just latest ATI drivers for my 9800pro and although the drivers are working fine the new feature, the catalyst control center will not load.

I have installed MS .net framework 1.1 as it says you need to on the ATI site. When I try and launch the CCC nothing happens, or when I try and launch the Wizard for it I just get the message: CATALYST ControlCenter Desktop Setup Wizard Failed.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Isn't there an update for .net framework since SP2 was installed?

Do I need SP2 on then to use the CCC?

It is a tricky one when you make a new driver available - millions of people install it without any issue - but some people end up with the issues

The problem is that they are not always replicable

I have a variety of test boxes and - about 6 months ago - tried a competitors card on the rig

Have to say - no problems there - but I had 'fun' when I went to put in the next ATI card

Luckily, I am up to my neck in (a) support specialists and (b) experienced contacts in the press

Someone suggested that when a driver uninstall program runs - then it might not always do as good a job as you would like

I went to a web site that shall remain nameless (cos Dutton will shoot me for linking to the competition !)...

...and downloaded a tool that allows you to clean out old drivers (by now you either know exactly what/where I am talking about - or you are hopelessly lost)

I loaded the program - selected 'the competitor' as my 'target - ran the cleaner and it turfed out loads of files that had been left behind

One re-boot and reinstall later and everything was fine

The Catalyst team work really hard to make sure their uninstaller is effective and efficient - and they update the driver every month - and they get the whole thing WHQL certified...

...it is always possible to have stuff left from other installations that will cause problems

Under the heading 'practical suggestions' (rather than 'ATI recommended' !!!), you could:-

    • Clean out all of the old drivers - reboot - uninstall .NET - reboot - reinstall .NET - reboot - reinstall driver - reboot - see if it works
    • Put that card and driver on another machine and see if they work
    • Using a product that cleans drivers and see if that helps
    • Remember that you have an up-2-date back up of everything on your box - and made a perfect image of your drive when you first built your system - so you can roll back and try again

    Thoughts ?...

sigh.. everyone's so lucky. I can't run any ver of CCC. Every install tells me at the end of when CCC is installing "atiacmxx.dll failed to register HRESULT -2147220475". A ticket to ati just said go check installshield site. blah

I hate the way CCC keeps getting pushed, even Hexus only links a direct download on the front page to the CCC version of the drivers, and not the standard control panel ones.

We did brief all of the top press recently on the way that CCC will be developing and we believe that the changes will be of great benefit to everyone

However, you can just type www.ati.com and get the Control Panel version

We do not push products that our customers do not demand

You have to consider how many systems are sold globally by local companies and how many by the multi-nationals

We listen to all of these customers and work to make available the features that they request

Catalyst Control Centre is evolving to become what the majority of customers are telling us that they need...

...which is the way it's meant to be developed

I would recommend always using driver cleaner after an uninstall of a gfx driver. You are then fresh for the next install. Makes life easier.

I see, i'm glad i'm not in that majority - they must be asking for a slow, cumbersome, buggy and invasive program, seems a little fishy to me

Getting rid of older drivers before installing the latest may very well be a good idea. However, it gets a bit more complicated at times. I stopped doing it when I got my first nVidia chipset based motherboard (ASUS A7N8X Deluxe) because when I tried to get rid of the old graphics drivers for the then installed GeForce 4 Ti 4600,….motherboard drivers were detected too. New applications may be better at detecting only the graphics drivers but it was more of a hassle then I was willing to go through then.

Right now my main rig is based on the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with an installed X800XL but I’ll likely be getting a Crossfire board when they become available.

BTW, I too cannot seem to run any version of CCC. I have come across quite a few different error messages in my attempts and the latest was oddly enough related to a “language pack” of some sort. Actually I did get it running once but for some reason CCC wouldn’t start unless I allowed it access through my firewall each time I started it.

Personally, I really want CCC running before or when Cat 5.7 comes out since there will be some nice new features available in the MCE control panel.
