    upgrade from 6950

    Hey All,

I`ve been rocking a PowerColor HD 6950 PCS++ 2 GB Review for a couple of years now and whilsts its been a good card it does struggle to output at 2560 x 1440 to my monitor.

So I was thinking about upgrading.

Basically i want the best value for money that will happily display graphics at that res.

    Cheers

    Re: upgrade from 6950

Reading the 7970 and 280x are pretty much the same card right?

Looking at the 780 price its about 100 quid more than the 280/7970 as well. and the ti is even more than that. Is the performance boost worth the cash? I`ve been amd for years would moving to Nvidia be worth the agro of changing drivers etc?

Budget wise I dont want to go crazy I just want to play games at the res my monitor intended

Price/performance in order lowest first: 7970/280x then R9 290 then gtx780. R9 290x and gtx780ti are not worth the premium imho.

    Re: upgrade from 6950

    From a 6950...?

A 7970 GHz / R9 280X will give you between 50% and 100% improvement at 1440p (that's comparing stock to stock) depending on game (best figures are for CryEngine games, if that's your bag).
The R9 290 will put a further 20% or more into an R9 280X. It has around the same performance as a GTX780, BUT it does run pretty loud, and - conventionally at least - hot*. Partner-designed cards should sort both of those issues out, but they're not available yet (although you could fit your own after-market cooler ).

So - how much are you willing to spend, and how long are you willing to wait? A 7970/R9 280X will give you a huge performance boost over your 6950, and can be bought right now for < £250. An R9 290 gives a decent bump in performance again, for a not unreasonable premium, but reference cards probably (IMNSHO definitely) aren't worth buying and we don't have a definite timescale for partner cards being released.

Oh, and as a bit of a wildcard suggestion: the Radeon 7990 is currently being sold of as EOL, and can be grabbed from £400: http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-...096-streams%29 - and the 7990 is still pretty much the fastest graphics card available...

*I say conventionally, because we've got used to graphics cards running at 80C or less. The 290(/X) is designed to run at 95C for the core chip, but obviously that's a much higher temperature than people are used to, and of course they've not been around long enough to tell if that higher design temperature will have any impact on the lifespan of cards, so people are getting antsy about the temperature. 3rd party coolers can make the chip run much cooler than that, which is why I say there' sno point buying a reference card if you've got the patience to wait.

    Re: upgrade from 6950

Non reference 290 when they're out is your best bet. After market coolers that have been fitted on them have dramatically reduced sound (not heat because it just overclocks more). It seems as though the stock cooler is really really poor

I'm pretty sure I've seen figures with an Accelero 3 keeping a 290 at under 80C with a huge overclock. Eventually the chip will hit frequency or TDP limits, and if the cooler is good enough it'll do that well before it hits the thermal limit.

Maybe so, but the one I saw showed the chip hitting 90 ish still. They must have had a good card or low fan speed

That's a very cynical attitude for a relatively new member

Be assured that the mods do keep a close eye on people who appear to be posting just to get free Scan shipping, and have means at our disposal to deal with such people Plus the deal is at Scan's discretion, and they're free to refuse/revoke it if they think people are taking the Mick.

OTOH we like to keep a fairly light hand on moderation, and new members are often ... enthusiastic ... in their posting habits before settling down and becoming valued contributors to the hexus community Heavy handed moderation during someone's first 20 posts could easily leave them thinking Hexus isn't worth contributing to, and we have no interest in chasing people away. So we give them a bit of rope - genuine spammers will hang themselves soon enough!

Oh I totally get that, but you can let help think that when the last 18 posts at the time I was looking were by the same guy, never using more than 4 words at a time. It is wrong to assume, but I think moderation is good here. I get tired on some forums where you need a minimum post count etc
