Question MSI GTX 770 Lightning Edition - PSU Help

    Hello everyone.

I've decided to buy the MSI GTX 770 Lightning edition for Christmas and it is arriving tomorrow.

However, I would very much like to know if this card would run fine on my OCZ ZS Series 550W Power supply. I'll be buying a 600-750W PSU after Christmas of course but if I receive the card, would it run well enough on this power supply for high end games such as Metro, Crysis, BF4 etc.

I'll be buying either the XFX 650W PSU or upgrading to another OCZ ZS Series but at 750W. But if you know of any good power supplies that are preferably under £70, I would appreciate the help!

    My current rig is:

    Intel i5 2500k 3.3Ghz
    Asrock Pro67 ProS3 Motherboard
4GB 1333mhz ram (Upgrading this as well!)
    OCZ ZS Series 550w PSU
    1TB Hard drive
    Coolermaster Elite 430 case.

I wouldn't upgrade the PSU at all - it's solid and great reviews.

If I was going to upgrade, I'd go for a CS550/650

I just bought one and I'm extremely happy with it.

The card should work fine but if you have the money to spend get a bigger one to accommodate future upgrades, I have a 700W PSU for a Nvida GTX 670 and AMD FX6300 which is overkill but I have loads of headroom for upgrades in the future.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

I would also say you don't need a new psu. Your OCZ ZS 550 is a Sirtec built unit with a single 12v rail of 456w. Your card will pull around 195w at full load. I doubt your system will pull more than 300-350w leaving you a comfortable amount of headroom.

The MSI 770 will actually pull around 360W at full load. Although using some power consumption calculators, your system should still have a bit of headroom to run though.

The full system will pull 360W, which is fine for a 550W PSU.

Sorry but that's wrong. What you are reading is total system load. I got the 195w from a couple of reviews that stated card power draw only. A GTX 780 only pulls a max of 268w and even then only by running Furmark. Normal gaming power draw is 222w.

I like this post and thumbs up to you. Real figures with real world tests to back it up. Good job!

Oh really? Thats my bad then. I was reading a review of the card and I could of sworn that it said that's what the card draws.

Well at least it will run fine on his system then

I would say stick around the 650w mark for the highest efficiency out of the PSU

Re: MSI GTX 770 Lightning Edition - PSU Help

Valky - are you intending to add a second gtx 770 in the future? I posted a similar question (I am buying the gigabyte 770) and wondered what would be the required power needed. General consensus was to get 750-850w.

I know you are looking at the under 70 mark but it really depends on what you intend to do in the future. No point saving £10 now and then realise in the future you need to fork +£70 for a new psu so you can upgrade.
