    1080p gaming card recommendations

My trusty GTX480 is really starting to show its age now, and is letting the side down compared to the other bits in my PC.

So the time has come to look for a GPU upgrade. I only do 1080p gaming, and would prefer to keep around the £250 mark (£280 absolute tops), which I know isn't loads. I would consider second-hand cards though.

The most obvious choice seemed to be a 2Gb GTX 770, but as I'll be keeping this card for 2-3 years I'm not sure if 2Gb of VRAM will be future-proof enough - and the 4Gb models seem to be out of my budget, unless anyone knows otherwise?

I'm also wondering whether a 3Gb R9 280X might be the answer, but I'm pretty out of touch with AMD GPU's. How does a 280X compare to a 770 in terms of performance and noise?

    cheers

    Danny

Hmm, I know the 280X is just a slightly cheaper/slower 7970 GHz Edition, but it seems pretty tempting at that price...

Go for the Sapphire 280x Toxic, imo best price/performance ratio and it's around the same as/better than a 770, with more ram

    Re: 1080p gaming card recommendations

I had a GTX670 2GB before the 780 i have now and in certain games i was running out of vram when gaming at 1920x1200 so i would,t go for a 2GB card now. The R9 280X that OCUK has for £220 has got to be the best bang for buck around at the moment. It's a factory overclocked card with a decent cooler. The only thing Nvidia has around that price is the 760 which is beaten by the R9 280X in most if not all games.

One thing i would say is, if you are thinking of buying it do it now because the price will go up tomorrow.

    Re: 1080p gaming card recommendations

second hand 7950 or 670 4 gig , or new 280x or 770 4 gig , i picked um mine but they more expensive now msi gamer 770gtx oc 4 gig for 280 £ sold game bundle for 30 £ .

i would recommend 3 gig minimum as if you surpass 2 gig of video ram you will experience stuttering.

    Re: 1080p gaming card recommendations

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm pretty keen on the 280X Toxic, but can't find one for love nor money! They seem to be sold out everywhere, though not surprising I guess, given the price/performance ratio.

There's one on eBay but it's £300 which is way too much. Does anyone know of any stock on UK sites at sensible prices?

    Re: 1080p gaming card recommendations

It's on pre-order now at £157 but i would'nt touch a XFX gpu with a barge pole. Their cooling is well below par with no heatsink on the VRM's and their warranty support is abysmal.

The closest I can see is No.2 on this page, but it says price on request and is out of stock anyway. I don't think the other XFX 7970 on that page is a GHz Edition.

    Re: 1080p gaming card recommendations

I was just reading a review of the Toxic on Anandtech, it has some crazy power consumption - 100W more than a 780 when running Furmark. Ouch! Still like the look of it though so I reckon I'll pre-order one from Scan and just wait for it to come into stock.

    Re: 1080p gaming card recommendations

I'd pick up one of these two:
    http://www.dabs.com/products/gigabyt...57430000&src=3
    http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-am...94941838&src=3

Sapphire are getting pretty good, but Asus are much more refined. Lower power and lower noise.

    Re: 1080p gaming card recommendations

Thanks chaps. From what I can gather the 770's are marginally faster than the Asus 280X, but I just don't think a 2Gb card is going to last me 30-36 months, which I need it to do. And the 4Gb versions are a bit over my budget (although I'm starting to feel some budget creep coming on )

The 770s are definitely great value for money at the moment.

Even though its a 2gb card, unless you're using a multi monitor setup it should last you another year and a half to 2 years, im about to pick one up for myself.
