EVGA 780 FTW ACX Fan makes high pitch noise.

    Morning all,

I recently received this card as an upgraded replacement to a faulty MSI 770 (yup that's my thread about 10 below this one) and i'm having issues with it.

The ACX cooler fans make an audible high pitch noise when running at certain speeds like theyre resonating with something or wobbling slightly. Ive checked this using EVGA Precision and increasing the speeds of the fans by 1% at a time. The noise is present more often than not. It is not coil whine as this noise can be heard on the desktop and i can stop it by placing a finger on the fans to slow them down.

Has anyone had a similar experience with an EVGA card with this cooler? Is there a fix?

The way i see it ive got 3 options:-
1 - Send it back to Scan and see if they think its annoying enough to warrant a replacement
2 - Live with it, though its bloody annoying as i use my pc for everything and it lives in my livingroom.
    3 - Attempt a fix myself.

The card is less than a month old so i could send it back no problem but if Scan think im being stupid it'll cost me for the check and return postage.

    Just looking for advice. Cheers.

Is it one individual fan or all of them? Can you see under the shroud far enough to see if its interfering with anything? I had a Gainward 6800GT donkeys ago where one of the fan wires was catching a blade. Bit of a fiddle with a cocktail stick had it right.

Hi herulach. It appears to be one individual fan that's making the noise, the one next to the power connectors. Ive removed the card and had a good look but cant see anything under the fan that would interfere.

The best way i can describe the noise is its like a constant squeak or squeal at certain speeds, again, more often making the noise than not. Really annoying.

I have the same card and although it's now under water i did run it for four hours with Heaven looped before taking the cooler off. I did not hear anything out of the ordinary with the ACX cooler. In fact i thought it was pretty quiet.

This is the exact same problem I have with my same card as well. I called EVGA and they're doing an RMA on it and will ship me a new card. At first the fans were silent for the first 4 hours of run time, then the next 20 hours the one nearest the power was squealing (think a loud cricket). The last two hours it was quiet again. The squeal was unbearable since you could hear it over gameplay and in other rooms.

If it's the usual fan squeak, a drop or two of WD40 inside them normally solves it. Being a new card though......
