Overclock Graphics Card?

I've heard some people say they overclock their graphics card.

It will make it faster = able to give better fps, which means you could play with higher settings and still get a good fps :)

Heres an example fo the difference it made to my 9700np *rip*

core 276.00/mem 276.00 (stock) - 3dm2k1 = 14755
core 446.40/mem 311.40 (o/c) - 3dm2k1 = 17744

What did you do to make it like that?

Also, what are those numbers "17744"?

I think I should point out that I'm not using a 9600 anymore - i've moved onto a 6800 (hence the quote in my first post in this thread). I'll change my sig now.

Is there an nvidia equvilant?

why would you want to overclock a card that does not need it yet? - maybe next year when games have caught up as it could possibly break your card, also dont overclock it until you have got better than standard cooling. Overclocking is simple, i believe in the detonator drivers (does 6800 still use these? ignore me if they dont) there is a tab which says has the clock speeds for the RAM and CPU, make sure you stage up rather than crank it up.

Look for coolbits/2 registry tweak for nvidia cards. Adds overclocking as an option to the display options in control panel.

Download RivaTuner, not only will it help you OC your card, it also has a utility that can unlock extra pipes and shader units in the core to improve performance. It doesn't always work, but it's well worth a try. As someone else said though, you probably want to upgrade your cooling before you try that, or try overclocking, since IIRC the 6800's stock cooling is a bit marginal.

For people who leave their computers on 24/7, a useful feature of graphics card overclocking programs is the ability to underclock your card when you're not playing games to save electricity:). I run the core of my softmodded 9500 at 150MHz most of the time.

If I'd need a better cooler, then I won't bother then. Thanks for the replies guys, I guess I just heard about people getting their 6800 to 6800 GT standard and wanted to give it a try :devilish:.
