I think they're about the same, though I'd go for a 9700pro personally.

No worse I would say. FX5900 means not running DX9 in HL2 because to force it you take a 65% performance hit.

also the 9700 pro is alot quieter than the fx5900 in my opinion

am i right in thinking that the 5900 is only 4 pipeline card too?
and i dont really like the sound of that 65% performance dip either, i thought it was fully DX9 compatible too.

It is fully DX9, its just not that good at it... :|
You can flash nearly all 5900 to 5950ultras though (with 128mb ram of course), which helps them a bit, but like mentioned, the DX9 performance isnt that good.
