GTX 770 vs R9 280x
Hi guys,
Sorry if this is a repeat thread, I couldnt find one with this topic. I'm building a new pc and debating between a 770 and a 280x. The performance is really close, and so is the price.
AMD has the Never settle forever stuff going for it, and 770 has the obvious advantage with all this gameworks rubbish going on at the moment.
Thoughts?

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
GTX 770 will perform better in most games, but as you say only slightly. Considering the fact that they're so close in price you might as well go for the 770. You'll get the benefits of PhysX and Geforce Experience. You'll get Watch Dogs with an Nvidia card, but I can understand if you wouldn't want that game...

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
GTX 770 and R9 280X are both similarly priced and both performs well. the 770 will pull ahead by a bit (+-4fps) but if both overclocked apples to apples the 280x will come up on top. like the gtx 680 vs 7970 GHZ, the tahiti chip will always come on top. the extra 1GB Vram will also help in the future

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
Personally i find the Nvidia drivers to be far superior. Geforce Experience is brilliant, applies optimal game settings at the touch of a button. The equivalent thing in the AMD Raptr software didn't find settings for half my games.
GTX 770 everyday of the week.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
I saw an R9 280X going for £185 somewhere which is a fair bit cheaper than a 770,

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
They are going like mad on eBay :) usually around the £160 mark; provided it isn't the best of places to source cards something to consider.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
You need to look at the games you play most and make an informed decision. If you play more games such as assassins creed then it will probably run better with an nvidia card. If you are on budget then the ati card is where you want to be.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
It's mostly down to personal preference. In reality, you won't notice the minor fps differences between them, but in my experience, Nvidia cards have always had stable drivers, the advantage of PhysX and run cool stock.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
Like many people above have said I do think that nvidia have the more stable drivers.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
I would go with the R9 280x, cheaper with similar performance and you can OC it to get better performance.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
770 with Nvidia's drivers/software plus added features I think is an all round more refined experience, but the 280x can be found cheaper and is quicker in several applications.
Another consideration would be if you'd ever be likely to require OpenCL or CUDA.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
Depends which is cheaper at the time. They generally sit around the same price as each other but I'd say it's worth the little extra for the 770

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
770 = GameWorks, physx (may be irrelevant), 3d vision (may be irrelevant), better drivers (some disagree)
280x = Mantle (may be irrelevant), Never settle bundle
What you play and what you want to play in the future should decide the best choice.

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
I was considering between these and as far as my research told me they are pretty much even with the 770 just edgeing it Buy whichever is cheaper is probably the best philosophy to take!
-
Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
Personally i'm a huge fan of 700 series, the 770 being one of the best, so my choice would be the 770

Re: GTX 770 vs R9 280x
There isn't all that much of a performance difference to make one of them a bad choice - just buy which ever you can find at the lowest price. I have a 680 flashed to 770 and it maxes Skyrim at 1600p, no sweat.
If the games in the AMD bundle float your boat, go for it - either card will be a solid investment for 1080p.
