I've just got a used TFT (compaq tft5010), and it's very dark. Does anyone know why this would happen, or how to fix it? I think it may be the backlight, but im not too sure.

More than likly the backlights, I think they use cathodes so may be fixable with some white cathodes?
Yea it does sound like the backlights, they normally use 2 white cathodes iirc, one on the top and one on the bottom. Is it still on warranty? Otherwise you could try and open it and replace them?
it's out of warranty, so i'll have to try and replace them. should be fun...
Dickie where abouts in the west midlands are you?
Also some of them have for example 4 cathodes behind the actual screen panel also behind a diffuser. It differs with different monitors.
I'm in stourbridge..
and as for the tft, i've just taken the lid off and I can see 2 cathodes, both of which seem to be working fine. could it still be a problem with those, or is it likely to be something else?
How bright are they? Cathodes get darker with age, same as most bulbs.
they're not amazingly bright, but not dull either. They are quite old tho (tft made in 2000!), so they probably do need replacing.
Maplins me best bet for them dya think?
I would try emailing Compaq first asking for details of the cathodes used, will be much easier to track down some good ones for it when we know all the details.
hp/compaq emailed, now time for some sleep!
