    6600GT vs 9800 Pro

The time has come to retire my trusty old GeForce4 Ti4200, and I want to replace it with something not costing the earth. My budget is around the £150 mark, I just can't justify spending more than this on a graphics card.

Looking towards some kind of future proofing, which is why I was looking at the 6600GT, being a new core etc, whereas the 9800 Pro is pretty old now, and I imagine the 6600GT will start to pull away from the 9800 Pro as newer more demanding games are released?

    Current specs are:

    AMD Athlon XP1700 @ 2200Mhz
    1GB TwinMOS @ 190Mhz FSB (2x 512)
    Abit NF7-S v2.0

Of course, don't limit your choices to those two cards, just I think they are the best two for my needs.

    Thanks

6600gt baby... it's a new card and will benifit a lot from future drivers... if you can strech the extra 20-30 quid for a 6800nu then that will walk all over these two but then again it is not in your budget and i know i would get annoyed if asking for advice only to be told to get something more expensive

If i could really get a 9800pro for £90 then i would get it, but they still for £130 on ebay and at that price, may aswell go for the 6600GT or preferably the 6800nu from LOW

actually i forgot about that.. 6800le sounds good.. especially as you are on AGP. you have a v.good chance of unlocking 4 pipes and a slim chance of getting all 8 unlocked using rivatuner.

Hmm it's still a bit of a gamble though isn't it?

The 6800nu at £182-£185 is a good buy, if you have that much cash. Its good standard but has also been reported to clock good.

Going by this review the 6600GT is just behind in speed from the 6800
And in most of the benchmarks it's 5-20fps faster than a 9800pro.
I know what i'd buy if i didnt have a 9800 pro already.

I've also found it real hard to get a 9800 pro unless i pay over £150 and there just not worth that much now.

You can get them from order247 for ~£145 I think, and if it doesn't unlock, send it back under the distance selling act. Thats what I did, and they even refunded the postage (only from them to me though, I dropped it in when I returned it)

I take it they perform better than a 6600GT then? What about stock performance, are they still better than the 6600GT?

    Cheers

The 6800 is better stock than the 6600GT, not sure on the clocking but ive been told the 6800 at least clocks well, especially as it has a rather good cooler on it

the 6800 has 12 pipes and 5 vertex shaders, the LE has 8 pipes and 4 vertex shaders. Thats it.
