If retek have any in stock get the ATI 9500pro for £49.94 (faster than a 9600 pro)
    http://www.retekdirect.co.uk/acatalog/Video_Cards.html

If they dont then the best video card i have seen for less than £50 is the ATI 9550. (But that isnt as fast a 9600)

FX5700LE 128mb at PCworld for £50, think it tops a 9550. Just under a 9600Pro performance I think, plus you get Farcry free

I dont think the manufactorer matters that much, unless you want to overclock.

But there two main versions of the 9550

The 9550SE 64bit ram so a lot slower (Which i'd avoid)

Or the 9550 which has 128bit ram so is faster.

You can get them with 128Mb's of ram or 256 obviously 256 is better but costs a lot more than £50 to buy.

Looks like re-tek have the 9500np 128MB card for just 42inc Vat, will most probably softmod to 9700. Go for it.

Its not likely to soft mod. Reason that core's on a 9500 NP is most likely due to the other remaining pipelines being damaged.

I got two 9500s from Retek. One softmodded perfectly, the other had minor artifacts which were not really intrusive in any of the games I played. Even if it doesn't mod, it's still a very good card for £50, since (if their stock is still the same as the ones they sold me) it has the full 256 bit memory interface.

the Radeon 9500 with the memory arranged in an "L" shape can very easily be upgraded to a Radeon 9700 by installing some Omega drivers that are designed to do it, it only works on the Radeon 9500 that has the memory in an "L" shape and it might be wise to get an arctic cooler for it as well

Not true. You can softmod the non-L-shaped 9500s too, but you only end up with a 9500 Pro if it works, not a 9700. The difference is that the L-shaped cards have the 256bit memory interface.
