    r9 290 tri-x cf

Just about to get 2 r9 290 tri-x and would wondering what power supply I would need. I currently have a cx 750m would that be good enough? I hope so as I have spent hours and hours and alot of money on braided cabbles. I have a i5 4670k and 2 ssd's 4 hdd's and a blue ray and dvd player. I hope I can get away with it as braided cabbles are a pain to do thanks in advance guys

    Re: r9 290 tri-x cf

    hey George

I think it was going to be close if that would be ok - I spent ages on power supply calculators trying to figure out if I could go back from 1kw (!!) to 650w max quality PSU , and without need it now seems , and I found that all of the calculator estimates in the end gave figures far higher than review measurements of power-at-the-wall for similar PCs.

I think there's maybe an argument for just trying it out, if you don't mind perhaps then having to then hold on to a slightly frazzled broken PSU you wouldn't otherwise need and going off to Scan (say) to get a higher wattage one. Jumping to this link shows me your cards may (overclocked) use around 270w each, so you may *only--just* need another PSU considering all those hard drives and the presumably already overclocked CPU. Sorry! I think a hard drive at load might use around 10w max by the way.

I guess the maths would be somewhere around 150w for the system with all those drives and the CPU (depending on the overclock), if we add (say) 265*2=540w for the two GPUs you have we're coming in at 690w max load. I would give it a go with a current 750w psu. Your likely 60 w headroom (and it may end up more than that) will probably not bother any 750w PSU that you considered braiding cables for

    my guess: it's good enough.

edit: assuming your PSU was tested at 750w for a reasonable amount of time by the manufacturer I'm quite certain it'll be adequate for this task (2*GPU gaming at full load)

    Re: r9 290 tri-x cf

I have done some more looking around and it does seem I'll be fine. I dont mind being a guinea pig as long as only the psu can fry and not my gpu's/cpu/mobo as thats where the money is. Also I would like to overclock the gpu's and the cpu is at 4.0ghz and I only have 2 hdd not 4. I think as long as I dont stress test the gpu's much as they dont pull as much power if I was gaming.

I think you will be fine. I am running one with a 600w power supply and a lot of other system demand from extra hard drives and fans etc and I have no problem.

What 600w are you using? And is anything on your system oc?

That PSU should be more than enough for a 290 george with 62Amps on the 12v rail.

    Re: r9 290 tri-x cf

According to this chart over at Kitguru, the Sapphire can draw up to 292W in Futuremark, so about 584W in total Crossfire. It's a bit lower at 220W / 440W in gaming though:

    Re: r9 290 tri-x cf

Have you got enough room for the cooling of the top card?
You'll need at least 1 to 1.5" of clearance, as you'll either be restricting the air flow, or just sucking in the hot air from the bottom card to cool the top one.
