Not the most informed on AMD cards, i'm a lover of nvidia
But using the benchmarks, I would say the 270x would have around 5-10% better performance than the 270
it all depends on whether you are willing to spend that bit extra to gain a very slight performance increase.
Also bear in mind the 270x uses more power, which also increases cost.
270 is in the same ballpark as the 7870 whilst the 270X is edging on 7950 levels.
They are just tweaked variants of their adjacent HD range.

The maximum i want to spend is £130, preferably a slight card would be a bonus.
The 270x is essentially an overclocked 270, if you are willing to overclock then save your money and you will be able to match or get near-270x performance from the 270.
I thought both could be overclocked, but the 270x could be further overclocked?
I believe the 270 can be clocked up to and above the base 270x performance quite easily. The 270x generally contain the higher binned chips though so will overclock even further.
The single PCI-E power connection on the 270 will also limit the power it can draw and thus its overclock potential. This limitation doesn't exist on the 270x.
If you would be happy with stock 270x performance then by all means get the 270 and overclock.
Not looking to over clock, so I went ahead and ordered the 270 a few days ago, cracking card!
I would still overclock it to get to stock 270x performance. Why not its effectively a free upgrade :-)

What 270 did you go for in the end?
locally I saw a 280x for £140 and ebay seems to reflect a price somewhere around that. Granted it's not new product pricing but it may be helpful to put your purchase in that context. I hope you like whichever you do decide on I would be checking bf3 benchmarks and perhaps another game to decide though mid range cards have traditionally been a good idea for 3d gamers upgrading
