Highish end graphics card that doesnt get too hot :D

    Hey all,

I'm having problems lately with games crashing out a lot when I'm on high settings. After a bit of investigation it looks like my current graphics card is overheating causing it to crash out.(goes up to over 80 degrees)

THinking 300 quid as a budget it.

I am using the silverstone fortress 3 case so super long cards are a bit of a no no although I do have room height/width wise to play with.

970 starts at £260; well worth a look IMO.

Or for a little extra you could get an overclocked GTX 970, like the EVGA Superclocked ACX edition and still come in under £300.

Look at the MSI GTX970, that's where I'd spend my money.

Re: Highish end graphics card that doesnt get too hot :D

Does the 970 run cool then?

Also can it out put 2550*1440 easily?

AS mentioned my current card is hitting 80 degrees when playing anything too taxing at high detail..(PowerColor HD 6950 PCS++ 2 GB Review)

I was going to say the MSI but the EVGA offers a slightly higher overclock and has SLi support listed while the MSI had a cross next to the SLi option on the Scan listing.

This what Hexus said about the temps for the EVGA FTW edition of the card in their review.

I think Scan's listing is wrong regarding the MSI card. Here's the official page stating 3-way SLI capable:

    Wow thats impressive!!

I might hold off a bit as mentioned in the review if other companies are able to get better cooling then It could be worth giving it till christmas.

    This raises another question though.

I have been using amd for a loooong time. Last time I swapped between amd/nvidia I was advised its best to do a full reinstall of the os to make sure there is no crap left install. is this still the case ?

I think most people would say re-instal the entire OS but you can use tools like DDU to remove old drivers before removing your old card and installing the new one.

Yes, it's still best. But uninstallers have got a lot better these days, and you can always follow up (carefully) with cleaning tools.

Bit obvious but have you tried cleaning out the dust bunnies from the card's cooler? ? I recently had a similar issue with an aircooled HD6950, it was also getting very loud, so took it out and the amount of crap I hoovered out was unreal. Put it back and it's a lot cooler & quieter now. The other thing has it been softmodded into 6970, if so try the switching to the backup bios and see if that fixes it.

all I did when swapping was to just uninstall the AMD drivers, turn off, swap cards, turn back on, install NVidia drivers. not had any graphics problems atall in the past few years. even going AMD to better AMD which used two different drivers all I did was to just swap the cards then install the drivers ontop of the old ones

    you'll be fine swapping around.

Just because it didn't happen to you it doesn't mean it won't happen to anyone else. At the very least use a tool to clear out the old drivers before installing the new drivers. After all, it's better to be safe than sorry.

going between AMD to nVidia I did use a tool, but staying with the same one I didn't bother, I wanted to see what happened.

the first part 'Just because it didn't happen to you it doesn't mean it won't happen to anyone else' can apply to any bit of advice on any subject on the internet, so that's a bit of a moot point.

    that's about it really.

I encourage people to uninstall old stuff before putting on newer stuff unless they want to see what happens. that's my thinking on the matter.

AS mentioned my current card is hitting 80 degrees when playing anything too taxing at high detail..(PowerColor HD 6950 PCS++ 2 GB Review)
Got my factory overclocked ASUS GTX 970 STRIX yesterday and tested it out in ArmA3 and BF4, I think temps peaked at about 65C running Ultra settings at 144Hz 1080p.

Cost me a few pence shy of £300 from Scan.
