    Re: gtx 970

I was looking to get a 970 in the next couple of weeks. All this memory hooha made me think twice but when it comes down to it, it still seems a good card for the money. I'm upgrading from a 560Ti so I still consider it a good upgrade.

If you're gaming at 1080p,then I'd say get the 970. At 1440p, it's a difficult choice. There are a lot of AMD 290X cards at about the same price as the 970, which is a good deal, & which may be a better bet in the longer term. Then again, the new AMD 300 series cards will be out in a few months, so the whole situation might easily change

Yes I am gaming at 1080, well 1680x1050 at the moment and haven't any plans to change my screen. If I do change it in a few years I may consider an upgrade from the 970 but I think that's the card i'm getting. Lets hope the prices drop because of this!

I am on a GTX660 and thinking of upgrading this year. Unless the needs is urgent,I suggest waiting a few months. I hope with the newer AMD range there should be a bit of a price war, which should drive prices down.

I would probably go for an R9 290/R9 290X if I was using a high res screen, but at 1080p I would be more inclined to get a GTX970 unless the R9 290 was massively cheaper.

    Re: gtx 970

I was planning on getting a 970 but owing to the deceit by nvidia, I will be opting for something with better value. Sure it runs today's games perfectly well, but I don't want to be stuttering with new releases a year from now.

I think this is the way to go. I'll do my CPU/Mobo/Mem upgrade now and wait for the GPU.

Have they fixed the coil whine issues?

Anyone have a list of which cards dont seem to be affected by this?

    Re: gtx 970

I have just fitted a Gigabyte Windforce GTX970 (the one with three big fans on). When continuously loaded with GPUGRID using BOINC, it runs at about 60°C with the fan profile giving a fan speed of about 55% (set using Afterburner). I cannot hear it over the (reference cooler) GTX660 running in the adjacent PC so I am very happy. .

OK the fan speed is low, but if the card runs this cool I see no need to up the fan speed. I'm that happy, I want another two for my other BOINCing PCs.

Coil whine or no coil whine is pretty much a matter og luck, so I can't see how it would be possible to compile a list. It's nowhere near as common a problem as reading the forums might give the impression of though, as only those affected by it will report in. Personally I've never experienced it, nor ever heard it outside of YouTube videos and such.

The Windforce cooler is excellent. I never, ever heard my previous card, a Gigabyte GTX670, even during prolonged stress tests.
