Which GTX680 To Get

I am looking to change my GTX580 for a 2nd user GTX680. Are there any recommended reference versions of the GTX680 or are all the reference versions much the same?

By definition, reference versions are much of a muchness. Instead of reference I would look at Gigabyte Windforce or MSI Twin Frozr models.

Hopefully you only run at 1080p, as you go above 1080p the 680 starts to lose it's lead on the 580.
