Looks like AMD are moving Mantle to do new tricks.

Interesting part:
"The Mantle SDK also remains available to partners who register in this co-development and evaluation program. However, if you are a developer interested in Mantle "1.0" functionality, we suggest that you focus your attention on DirectX® 12 or GLnext."
It sounds like they have new tricks to try in Mantle, the existing functionality is a done deal, wonder what Mantle 2.0 will bring :D
Re: Looks like AMD are moving Mantle to do new tricks.
It's an interesting post - part of me actually reads it like they're saying they're pretty much scaling down Mantle development now that the competition has stepped up.
Re: Looks like AMD are moving Mantle to do new tricks.
I read it one way and it sounds like they want people to move to DX12....
I read it another way and it sounds like they saying use DX12 if all you want is "mastery of the draw call" and that mantle will become something bigger.
Guess we will have to wait for clarification.
Re: Looks like AMD are moving Mantle to do new tricks.
Anandtech have an article on it as well, they seem to be thinking Mantle is moving on to something new.

Re: Looks like AMD are moving Mantle to do new tricks.
It seems like it's largely achieved its main goal anyway i.e. moving the industry towards reducing needless CPU overhead in games.
Being standardised in DX/OpenGL probably makes it simpler for both AMD and game developers rather than needing separate Mantle renderers for games.

Quote:
In fact Khronos has confirmed that AMD has contributed Mantle towards the development of Vulkan, and though we need to be clear that Vulkan is not Mantle, Mantle was used to bootstrap the process and speed its development, making Vulkan a derivation of sorts of Mantle (think Unix family tree). What has changed from Mantle is that Khronos has gone through a period of refinement, keeping what worked in Vulcan and throwing out portions of Mantle that didn’t work well – particularly HLSL and anything that would prevent the API from being cross-vendor – replacing it with the other necessary/better functionality
AMD have given Mantle to kronos as a basis of Vulkan *confirmed* in the way that Linux is a development of unix
Re: Looks like AMD are moving Mantle to do new tricks.
So it sounds like history may repeat itself.....back to OpenGL..
Now we just need nVidia to resurrect Glide ;)
