Sanity Check / Confirmation / Help

    Hi,

I currently have a GTX260 but this is obviously getting on a fair bit now and doesn't support newer versions of DirectX.

If I were to buy a GTX980 / 970 or similar would I see any noticable loss of performance with the new cards being PCI-E3 and old beign PCI-E2?

Don't want to spend on a new card if its going to prove pointless.

(Can't currently afford a new PC with saving for a house, so new GPU is next best thing - for now)
    Thanks,

Re: Sanity Check / Confirmation / Help

Most comparisons I've read show only a small benefit of running a GPU on a PCI 3 motherboard rather than PCI 2. It's usually only a matter of a few percent performance improvement, e.g.

    http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/...1#.VYquRflVihM

I think the difference might widen though once you get to 4K resolution or higher, but at 1080p or 1440p, you shouldn't be giving up too much performance by running on PCI 2.

Another test on Techpowerup with a 980: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/N...caling/10.html

PCIe version really isn't a big deal for gaming.

It makes sense really - if you run a two card crossfire or SLI system on a the Z97 chipset, the two cards run at PCI3 x8 speeds, which is the same as a single PCI2 x16 card. So the two card systems still run pretty well despite each only having PCI2 bandwidth.

It will be fine, it only seems to matter in very high end crossfire/sli configs.

Enjoy your new video card, good luck with moving house!

    Card ordered

House - nearly had a place, got survey back - new roof required, rear chimney stack needs rebuilding as does rear garden wall, that doesn't include the interior stuff >.<
Should have known the 45k price tag was too good to be true aha

I went to see a place like that. I don't mind a dooer-upper sort of place, but can't move in with a family when you know it needs to be a building site for a year. Shame in a way, the place I saw must have been worth a fortune after it was fixed up.

Oh well, better luck on the next place

That's why you get a survey done. I had an even worse survey years ago - the guy had replaced a slate roof with a tile one and the job hadn't been done properly, such that there was too much force on the outside wall. I went back that way a few months later and there was a dirty great beam propping up a bulging wall; it was still on sale but the price had dropped over 30%. Never skimp on the survey.

I'm surprised you got as far as a survey with that much work required! We've looked at a couple recently that we've walked in and just shaken our heads (and one or two that would be great projects at the right price, but the vendors clearly don't understand that if a house needs work you can't ask for the same price as a house in good condition!).

Eh, move in anyway, get the family helping with the work. It's character-building

Card related in and working and woohoo new games!

House - from the inside it didn't look that bad from the parts we could see, slight annoyance but thats what surveys are for.

    Maybe the next one! Ha
